• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Airport beacon question

Hi,
I'd like to add a functional rotating beacon to a small airport I've created.
Can this be done with ADE by adding objects and affects ? I had no trouble
adding a tower (for the beacon) and a beacon light assembly at the top of
the tower; however I haven't figured out how to make it functional (to light
up and rot.ate). Presumably some effects can be added to accomplish
this. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Best to all,
Ken Boardman

Can be done with ADE just right click, add, beacon.
The tricky bit is getting the height correct.

And you'll need to delete your non-functional beacon or you will have a duplicate visual display.

Thank you for the very fast replies. Pix is attached Last night I actually had the the tower and lantern assembly
erected to my satisfaction ( as mentioned above ), I just couldn't get the lantern to "do it's thing". I started up FSX
tonight to take a screen cap to illustrate the issue and (of course) it worked perfectly.
Best regards,
Ken

An afterthought > are there any secrets to increasing the brightness of the beacons ?

Hi Ken:

Are you wanting the existing default airport rotating beacon (both light and base) to be visible from a greater distance ?

I am not sure if it can be done without altering 3D models themselves, as the light cones are translucent 3D objects, not Fx.

If one were to use MCX to import the default beacon base, then export it to a 3D model format that can be imported in a 3D modeling application such as Sketchup or Blender, one could add a large triangle or rectangle welded to the bottom of the base, NOT textured, so it extends the object visibility radius.

One could then export in a 3D model format MCX can import, to finally export from MCX into a FS2Kx scenery MDL or BGL.

Some related info:

I am not certain what size ratio applies to FS2Kx invisible base extensions vs. increased visibility distance, but MSFS has this:

The only way I know to make it brighter is to increase its size, which makes the visual object quite large. Note however that as you move further away from the airport it will increase in size automatically.
