• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Alternative 3DS Max 2018 export? [SOLVED - Babylon Single Export]

Since the full SDK is only available for 3DS Max 2019.3 - is there an alternative for us older users running 3DS Max 2018? the Multi Export tool does not work with Max 2018 - so I don't know how to export a simple scenery model.

Is there a work around or is it best to switch to Blender?

Thanks in advance!

What about using Arno's MCX tool. Import your 3ds file and export as a GLTF. If the import works then you should be good to go. It's certainly worth a try.

Considering the expense of purchasing a license, and time spent on the learning curve for 3DSMAX, Ed's recommendation is a good one to consider.

Arno's ModelConverterX (aka "MCX") may prove useful in many other ways as well:

3DS Max is easy for me - the price, not so much any more.

I will try MCX - I just don't want to end up doing 50% of modelling work in 3DS and 50% in MCX - .3ds files will not read MSFS specific properties.

Bit of a shame that MS/ASOBO and even LM focus their SDK on a platform which is so ridiculously expensive and to be frank, way overpowered.

Thank you for the responses.

Hi again:

Personally, I want to create most of my 3D modeling in Sketchup, process / export via MCX, and NEVER have to utilize Blender or '3DS(&)M'.

BTW: AFAIK, Arno's MCX was originally a work-around for FS developers that could not- / would not- work with GMAX or '3D Studio Max'. :wizard:

Reading through the SDK again, I can at least use the Babylon exporter to export a single object. Unless I'm missing something though, it won't generate an XML. So I run it through MCX (Which I can use to double check material and object settings) and it exports with the XML file.

I understand you can create your own XML - but that's like going back to early FS9 days.

Every model export tutorial I read/watched always mentioned the multi-exporter, even the SDK favours it. I'm used to exporting multiple objects one by one any way, so this won't affect me too much - most importantly I can export my scenery objects straight from my version of Max whilst retaining all FS specific properties.

I would consider this - SOLVED
