• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Any X-Plane Model Makers here?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there are any X-Plane model makers here?

I was curious about how to go about converting a FS9 model to X-Plane 9 format, if and how it can be done, where to find tips on this, etc.

Many thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Bill,

I doubt you will find many here, given the MSFS focus of this site :).

If I remember correctly X-Plane uses a format that is not so difficult to read and convert (from the geometry point of view). But if that is enough for it to work I don't now, I also found this quote on a X-Plane FAQ:

How do I convert an aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator to use with X-Plane?
Sorry, you can't. The flight models are conceptually different, so no automated conversion is possible. The MSFS flight model is behavioral - that is, a large table of numbers deterines how the aircraft will behave under a certain set of conditions. The X-Plane flight model is structural - that is, X-Plane computes how the plane flies based on a model of its structure and other engineering parameters. MSFS also has a 3D model of the aircraft for external display use, but converting this to the X-Plane aircraft model would leave a lot of missing data. In addition, many of the more serious MSFS aircraft use plugin features that have no counterpart in X-Plane.

Hey Arno,

Roger. With XP9, they now have the ability to have hidden 'air models' and thus can now show something like a 'brick' that you see, and a hidden airmodel that the sim uses for flight dynamics. You can also now overwrite the airfiles for a plane to tune their flight characteristics.

I had heard that they use Blender, and a new program called 3D Plane Maker (I think thats the name). My thoughts are that one can export to Blender, give it the proper name tags for animated parts, and export to their MDL format, which is 'Obj'.

Someone at Sim-Outhouse that does scenery, has been converting alot of his FS work to XP9. I would be curious to know exactly what to do to export a basic model into XP9 to see just how difficult it is, sort of an experiment. Shoot, if it can be done fairly easy, it might be worth it. Looks like they could use some good models over there.

My theory is... If its easier to export/convert to XP9... well, you know... :D
