• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Asobo exporter - what Blender versions?

I have just been advised (elsewhere) that the latest Asobo exporter for Blender works in version 4.5 (I had been using Blender 3.6)

I looked up the SDK documentation and I couldn't see any information about what versions of Blender.

What is the highest version of Blender that the Asobo exporter works successfully with?

Thanks

Hi Gary

Those links are about MSFS2024 and I still have 2020 as marked on the heading/title.

I should have searched the MSFS2020 SDK manual for Blender as according to the MSFS2020 SDK manual -
  • This plugin is only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported.

Hi John:

It is not impossible prior versions of MSFS 2020 and 2024 required different workflows for content as discussed in other posts in that thread page #13:

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/msfs-asobo-official-blender-exporter.454146/page-13

However, if one compares wording of the MSFS SDK Docs for 2020 (and a 2024 'Beta build' I cited above), they say this regarding the Blender Exporter:

2020:

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/ht...lugin/The_Blender_Plugin.htm?rhhlterm=blender

"This plugin is only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported."

2024:

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/ms...Plugins/Blender_Plugin/The_Blender_Plugin.htm

"These plugins are only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported."

* Notice when you scroll up vertically on the cited MSFS SDK Doc web pages that they specify the MSFS numeric version the Doc pertains to.

* Notice too, in the 2024 SDK Doc URL immediately above, there is the term "flighting", which is an oxymoron as AFAIK, FSDEVS never "Fly" :rotfl:.

All joking aside, I have seen the term "flighting" used in Asobo's MSFS web pages to distinguish between Release To Mfg. (RTM) and Beta information.

I should have known if MSFS 2020 and 2024 could both be regarded as a Work-In-Progress (W.I.P.), each may have a set of "flighting" SDK Docs. :banghead:

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/html/home.htm

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/msfs2024/flighting/html/1_Introduction/Introduction.htm

The latter info is distinctly labeled as for 2024. :pushpin:

But, witness this post in the "official" MSFS forums regarding a 2020 Beta using the term "flighting":

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/...mulator-2020-sim-update-16-1-1-39-12-0/758903

"While flighting update 16.1 over the past several weeks, we’ve monitored feedback on stability and have confidence that the core issues we intended to fix have been addressed. However, due to fewer Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) flighting participants since the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, telemetry from flighting has become less reliable."

< Ahem... either that, or more people have begun turning off 'Telemetry' in Windows. :stirthepo >

And as I suspected, when one queries the MSFS 2024 SDK "flighting" Docs, one finds this info on the (intended ?) Blender Exporter compatibility:

"These plugins are only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported."

I suppose that if MSFS 2020 and 2024 can both be regarded as a Work-In-Progress (W.I.P.), each may have a prototype Blender Exporter version.

I have not yet found a specific MSFS 2020 beta download for the latest 'W.I.P.' of a "flighting" prototype Blender Exporter version; but I'll bet it exists. :coffee:

BTW: Here is Google's info on "flighting" in the context of MSFS:

FYI: When I do a Google search for SDK Docs info on MSFS numeric versions, I do typically do include the specific year in my query;

For 2020:

https://www.google.com/search?q=site:+docs.flightsimulator.com+Blender&sca_esv=16ba40aa3fcb8328&source=hp&ei=1UvSaY3YBtnN0PEPzdubqQg&iflsig=AFdpzrgAAAAAadJZ5aiVtq6tWbbpEZyW4tPKcJU5BZxi&ved=0ahUKEwjNlvLs0daTAxXZJjQIHc3tJoUQ4dUDCCg&uact=5&oq=site:+docs.flightsimulator.com+Blender&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IiZzaXRlOiBkb2NzLmZsaWdodHNpbXVsYXRvci5jb20gQmxlbmRlcjIFECEYoAEyBRAhGKABMgUQIRigATIFECEYoAEyBRAhGKABSLKLBFCJClim_wNwAngAkAEAmAHWAaAB1g-qAQY0LjExLjG4AQPIAQD4AQH4AQKYAhKgApwTqAIKwgIKEAAYAxiPARjqAsICCxAAGIAEGIoFGJECwgIREC4YgAQYigUYkQIYxwEYrwHCAg4QLhiABBiKBRixAxiDAcICDhAuGIAEGLEDGMcBGNEDwgIFEC4YgATCAgsQLhjHARjRAxiABMICCxAuGIAEGMcBGNEDwgILEAAYgAQYsQMYgwHCAgoQABiABBiKBRhDwgIIEC4YsQMYgATCAggQABiABBixA8ICCxAuGIAEGLEDGIMBwgIREC4YgAQYsQMYgwEYxwEY0QPCAgUQABiABMICCxAuGK8BGMcBGIAEwgIHECEYChigAcICBRAhGKsCmAMf8QW5hOM1bOQP1pIHBjIuMTMuM6AHjW-yBwYwLjEzLjO4B-wSwgcJMi0zLjguNi4xyAepAoAIAQ&sclient=gws-wiz

Following this link:

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/html/Asset_Creation/Blender_Plugin/The_Blender_Plugin.htm

...I find this:

"This plugin is only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported."

For 2024:

https://www.google.com/search?q=site:+docs.flightsimulator.com/2024+Blender&sca_esv=16ba40aa3fcb8328&ei=aUzSaYVl-punzg_06ffACg&biw=1088&bih=504&ved=0ahUKEwjFvbWz0taTAxX6zckDHfT0HagQ4dUDCBM&oq=site:+docs.flightsimulator.com/2024+Blender&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiK3NpdGU6IGRvY3MuZmxpZ2h0c2ltdWxhdG9yLmNvbS8yMDI0IEJsZW5kZXIyCBAhGKABGMMESMksULYLWIIbcAF4AZABAJgBlwGgAdcEqgEDMC41uAEMyAEA-AEBmAIGoALVBcICChAAGEcY1gQYsAOYAwCIBgGQBgiSBwMxLjWgB5oJsgcDMC41uAeyBcIHBzItMi4zLjHIBz6ACAE&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

Following this link:

https://docs.flightsimulator.com/ms...Plugins/Blender_Plugin/The_Blender_Plugin.htm

...I find this:

"These plugins are only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS and 3.6.x LTS. Other versions are not supported."

Thus, the "RTM" ('Retail') version of MSFS 20204- and SDK Docs- show Asobo does not (yet) specify Exporter compatibility beyond Blender 3.6.

As numerous threads here at FSDEV point out, that does not mean we have no results using MSFS SDK 2024 Blender Exporter with 'Other versions'.

As ronh is part of the team that is / was developing multiple forks of the MSFS Blender Exporter, I assume his posts contain info worthy of consideration.

That also may infer ronh is a highly experienced programmer and Blender user, and thus I assume his posts contain info worthy of consideration.

Although ronh's info refers to capabilities (intended ?) within an existing "Beta" build of MSFS, I doubt that SDK Doc would exist if it did not already work.

So, yes, the specific MSFS version that is this thread's subject is 2020; I do hope MSFS 2020 RTM Docs link is now in your Bookmarks / Favorites. :)

As for a MSFS "Manual", that is the SDK Docs, as there is no MSFS 'Manual'; thus, at FSDEV for MSFS queries, we can no longer just say "RTFM". :tapedshut

Is there some specific MSFS 2020 project goal you need / want to achieve, that seems possible / or preferable to do in... "other" Blender versions ? :scratchch

PS: The world time zone clock indicates it is still not too late to have a Happy Easter where you are. ;)

Hi John. I don't know if there is any advantage to using anything but Blender 3.6 for MSFS2020. Most changes to newer blender versions seems aimed at rendering. The glTF format hasn't changed and the Asobo addon works well with Blender 3.6

I have just been advised (elsewhere) that the latest Asobo exporter for Blender works in version 4.5 (I had been using Blender 3.6)

I looked up the SDK documentation and I couldn't see any information about what versions of Blender.

for my money, I Never update anything 3rd party 'midstream' during a project
its just throwing in a new possible set of issues

If this is a new project then maybe, but I agree with rhumbaflappy, unless there are specific upgrades to blender you Really need
3.6 blender has a proven track record of being stable across multiple game, sdk and plugin upgrades
The 2020 SDK Docs do state you can use newer, but I wouldnt change if you already started with another blender version

"This plugin is only compatible with Blender 3.3.x LTS, 3.6.x LTS, 4.2.x LTS, and 4.5.x LTS. Other versions are not supported"
Be sure to grab the version you want from the LTS site here

whichever blender version you choose i suggest using the plugin from the current version of the game and sdk your using, this isnt really documented as necessary afaik but ...
since the sdk uses the game itself it just makes sense to me to have everything 'match' all the way thru the dev process including the blender export with the plugin

the last project I worked on for 7 months, I upgraded the game, sdk and plugin as they came out but stayed on 3.6 blender, I had no issues thru out the entire project with this method
