• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

ASR-9 Radar

Hey guys... I need to make a radar with FSDS 3.1.

What do I need to do? It's the ASR-9 type with the big rotating red radar on top. I can build it very easily, I just need to know how to get the radar to spin.

Dear jonmkj:

You've got to use animation with the radar dish.
Find out how to animate a group of objects with FSDS.

I made a ASR-9 radar with animation using 3Ds Max for FSX.

Thanks.

I remember that we could use the beacon* animation tags, but I believe that was for FS2002/FSDS2.

Since this is for FS2004, can the tick18 tag be used?

(I don't have FSDS on this machine right now to double check).

The modelling of the radar is not important - whether it's FSDS, gmax, Max... it's how it's named/tagged that's the important thing.

Thanks for the pointers guys...

I'd like to have a look at your rendition of the ASR-9 if you wouldn't mind :D

Aha! Looks very nice!

The top part is exactly what I'm going for, but the base is a little different. It's wider and gray. More specifically, its the radar at KGSO.

Of course, KMYR is on my "to-do" list as well, and they have an ASR-9 AND the new ASR-11... which look the same so it doesn't really matter

ok, i got the radar modeled, and i followed the directions exactly to get it animated. So i load it up in FSX, and the radar tower looks nice, but the dish is halfway buried in the ground sideways, and isn't moving at all.

the part axis is at the bottom of the radar dish, the place where it should rotate around.

should it be set as the child?

Possibly - make a small box, unanimated and the same coordinates of the radar part. Makes the box a child of the tower, and the radar a child of the box.
