• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

AutoCoast...?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with AutoCoast?

http://autocoast.sourceforge.jp/

From the looks of it, it seems like a nice tool... Was just wondering if anyone has already tried it and would like to share their experiences.

Alternatively, is there any convenient way to use GSHHS coastline data with Slartibartfast?

I am just about to start working on my first 'real' project involving major coastline modifications, and am trying to decide which tool(s) and which data is most convenient to use. Thanks for any help! :)

Best,
- Björn

Hi Björn.

The GSHHS coastline data is a bit rough and misplaced in spots.

A better source of coastline data may be the SRTM WaterBody data:

ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2/

( SWBD )

They are the water flatten data used in the version2 SRTM HGT files. They also need smoothing, but are a bit more accurate than the GSHHS... which are getting a bit dated.

I agree that where i have attempted to use it, the GSHHS was too coarse and seemed to have an offset in it, compared to the SRTM and LANDSAT data I was also using. I was considering using the LANDSAT ETM Band 4 data with Slarti which some users have had good results using.

Thanks for your replies! And sorry for being so slow in answering, seems I didn't get the email notifications for some reason...

I ran into some troubles with AutoCoast; it was lightning fast and effortless in creating the coastlines, but not flexible enough to produce the result I wanted. I ended up using GSHHS data in Slartibartfast, but I also did notice the coarsness you are talking about. I am pleased enough with the result to leave it as it is (still a major improvement over the default coasts for the area!), but if I do something like this again I will probably use SWBD instead.

@ ras78: That is weird, worked on this end so I have no clue what might be the problem...

Best,
- Björn
