• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Boolean operation

Hey all. I'm trying something in GMAX I just can't get a handle on. I have a place on my Phoenix scenery where a freeway goes underground below a park and I have an excellent photoreal high-res shot I'd like to overlay on a plane above the scenery. My intent is to flatten the ground below that plane so that I can actually have the freeway angle down through that tunnel.

It's a simple thing to just put a rectangular plane over the cutout area and texture the photo onto it but then the areas on the image where the freeway drops I need to exclude from the plane. I'll then texture road planes for the freeway. It'd make it easier if the road was perfectly square to the area but it angles and curves in and out.

Here's what I envision but I have no idea how to make it happen. Create a plane that follows the roadway and use a boolean subtraction from the main texture plane for the cutout. It appears GMAX can do that but I can't tell within GMAX if it's working. When I apply the boolean I don't see the hole in the image. Can someone point me to help on this subject please. This would be very cool if I can get it to work.

Hi Art,

I think I would make a box and stick that through the plane. If you then use the boolean you should get a hole at the location of the box. When you use a plane as second operant you will not get a hole but only a sort of "crack".

After you have the hole, you need to make something to show below it of course, but that should not be a big problem.

I figured out too, after some research today, that I wasn't setting the merged assembly back to editable mesh. When I did the boolean subtraction my plane did disappear. My guess is that had I done that next step, the objects would've shown up together. I did notice that in all the tutorials I found about adding windows to houses, they used a box and not a plane for the excluded area. I learned a lot about extruding splines today. Since the holes I have to create aren't square, that may be the better technique than using a box I have to stretch and manipulate.
