• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v2 Building ports - with piers/docks & seawalls

There might be a couple questions here in one.

The idea is to build the US Naval Station at San Diego.

You can see in the above photo the white arrow -- that is more or less the port area.

I am somewhat familiar with Sbuilder and I have built PR scenery with blendmasks and watermasks. But it would seem that I need to remove some of the unwanted coastline areas.

I'll get a screen shot to show what I am needing to remove. I am hoping that simply creating an EXCLUDE ALL SHORLINES or something like that will effectively remove those ugly jetties, but I doubt it after reading that other recent thread about adjusting coastlines.

I like the idea as I live a couple of miles away from the white arrow. Looking forward to seeing it let me know if I can help in any way.

Probably should have started with a smaller port, like Mayport or Everett or someplace -- just to build my skills.

But what the heck, we're off and rolling now, so 32nd street it is!!!

So you can see where Vector or FSX/P3D default or whatever has placed coastline jetties where the piers are.

Really hoping a simple exclude will remove those.

I think now the I need to just go back and tidy up the blendmask a bit, and remove the pier imagery altogether. I was hoping to make the photoreal piers jutting out there with nice crisp flat/straight edges,

How would a fella go about building the seawall, anyway?

I hate to have to go in and do a model for pier - although I have started to experiment with that approach as well:

Hi Ripcord, fancy seeing you lurking down here

Removing shorelines is fraught with developer-pain I'm afraid, remove one tiny bit and boom...a whole area vanishes, when I did Samoa I traced all the shorelines directly off my photoreal imagery with Globalmapper

And another thing to consider... which setup are you making this scenery compatible with?: a default FSX with nothing added? or a FSX with Vector/UTX addons etc?

Lurking is a good term Tim. Pleased and honored that a salty shellback like you would even recognize a wog of my ilk.

This is freeware so you get what I make for myself. So no FSX default here.

Doing it for Vector until such time as FTX SoCal hits the shelves -- they 'should' both use pretty accurate vector data, and so I am not expecting a great deal of variation between the two.

Probably the simplest way is to use a little bit of photoreal like you have done, then deal with removing anything that dosent look nice with SbuilderX

I.e exclude the shoreline, then redraw the shoreline (only need to do it outside of your photoreal area to repair the coastline), then a water polygon in places you get land where there should be water instead

The 'build an island with SbuilderX' tutorials are how I started dabbling with altering coastlines

shoot me your skype in a PM if you get stuck

What I would like actually is to not have any coastline showing -- I want the photoreal dock area to end in a 90 degree drop down into the water, eg, a seawall. Right now the only I idea I have is to use a series of little custom-made library objects and place them around the edges of my dock areas.
