• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX C172 Engine Fire effect not visible from cockpit

I just noticed that when an engine fire happens using the default Cessna 172 if you are on the virtual cockpit you NEVER get to see any indication that the engine is on fire. No smoke, no fire, nothing.

If on the other hand you change your visual to the OUTSIDE of the cockpit then you see the effect, a LOT of smoke and fire coming out of the underside of the engine.

Any ideas how to fix that so that the user can see it from inside the cockpit?

Hi Lordofwings!

Sounds like to me that they did not attach the effect to the interior model. To get it to work if this is what they did not do. Is to make a new interior model and attach the effect.

Thanks, Kris

I noticed that not only the default C172 suffers from that problem but also the default Beechcraft Baron, don't know about the others. The fire is visible from outside but you cannot see it through the cockpit windows...

How can I attach it to the interior model?

You will have to completely make a new interior model for that aircraft. Then you can attach the effect to your new interior model.

Thanks, Kris

Hi Emilio:

Remember that if this is for your own personal use, you could back up FS' default C-172, then edit a COPY in MCX with Attached Object Editor:

[FSX install path]\SimObjects\Airplanes\C172\model\cessna172sp_interior.mdl

Hope this helps ! :)

Hum... beyond my understanding, I will have to live without it. I have no idea how the ACES team let this fault go unnoticed.

Hi again:

Bear in mind that one may have such fire Effects triggered as a result of Gauges and how the engine is over-stressed during user operation ...when aircraft realism is fully activated in the FSX menu as seen in the (default ?) P-51 Racer.

Alternatively one may manually trigger such fire Effects via the aircraft Smoke System key (I), as cited in this downloadable example package:

FSX/FS2004 severe wing fire effect. This is made for the FSX/FS9 Default Boeing 747-400 but you can use it for other aircraft. Includes Big wing fire and Small wing fire effect. NOTE-*Not tested in FSX but should work* By Claudio Pizzirani

Or one may use either FSUIPC or SimConnect to toggle display of a ex: engine fire:

Hope this helps a bit more ! :)

I can display the engine fire although it seems to have some glitches. The problem being actually that when the engine fire is on, it is only visible if you are viewing the a/c from outside but from within the VC absolutely none of the fire effects (seen from outside) become visible, no fire no smoke, not ahead, not on the sides (twin engines or mono engine). From the VC it looks as if absolutely nothing is happening.

Hi Emilio:

Have you tried using an open cockpit aircraft ex: FS default AirCreation_582SL or a Biplane etc. to see if wind screen 'material properties' may be what disables fire Effect visibility inside the VC ? :scratchch

Also, I'm wondering if the "Effect emitting an Effect" Type-26 might work better ?

You may wish to examine these default Effect (*.FX) files: ;)

[FSX install path]\Effects\Cntrl_fireworks.fx
[FSX install path]\Effects\FW_Controller.fx
[FSX install path]\Effects\FW_show1.fx
[FSX install path]\Effects\FW_show2.fx
[FSX install path]\Effects\FW_show3.fx
[FSX install path]\Effects\FW_show4.fx

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc526969.aspx#Emitter

Since we can see Effect lights at airports, and fireworks in the sky from aircraft VC interior MDLs, it would seem likely we may be able to see other Effect types from the VC as well, if we can identify what *.Fx file parameters / values or wind screen material attributes are required to enable full visibility within a aircraft "interior MDL".

Thus, it might merit further experimentation to find a way to successfully enable visibility of a fire effect on an engine from within the VC. :)
