• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can someone help convert a kmz model for me

Hi,

Sometimes the export screen closes at a number like 42%. That does not mean it did not export. You should test to see if if exported.

Hi,

I would prefer to help you fix your problem.

I had no problem here converting the KMZ file with ModelConverterX. This is what I did:

  1. Load the KMZ, this took quite long due to the complexity of the model
  2. Run the drawcall minimizer, the orginal model had over 750 drawcalls (very very bad for a scenery object). It was reduced to 20
  3. Run the Mass texture editor to convert the remaining JPG files to DDS
  4. Export to FSX BGL to have it placed at the location specified in the KMZ file

Can you tell us what you tried and where it failed?

You can download the object I made here:

I think Arno has pretty much offered a solution. However....

Is this a new KMZ file? Google Changed their format for KML/KMZ, and since a KMZ is a 'ZIP' file, or archive, of KMLs, you may need to convert the new Google Format to the older FSX compatible version( maybe  ). I believe it has to with the way they do their LatLon...

Check out the FSX_KML Converter in the Tools section, for your next KML/KMZ project...

Hope that helps! ;)

Hi,

When did they change the format, recently? I have not seen problems with this year. More than half a year ago I made some changes to the KMZ reader, it does support two versions of KML now.

Arno, sorry for the confusion, I am referring to the time frame when they switched their co-ordinates in the KML file. Not sure how long ago that was, but may have been around a year and a half ago. Your ModelConverterX is a GREAT program, but without it, the KML/KMZ files need to be converted another way.

It was just a thought to the possible KMZ conversion problem... :p

Thanks guys I have been away our of town on business I am going to give it a shot I have converted 40 models for Las Vegas so far in the past year this one was giving me issues. I will keep you posted up next I need to figure how to add night lighting to these models :)
