• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Canadian GeoGratis data

Hi all,

Let me preface my post with the caveat that I'm a complete beginner at all forms of scenery design etc, and therefore apologise in advance for any pain or discomfort caused by my query.

I want to import some GIS data from the canadian Geogratis site : http://geogratis.gc.ca/site/eng/extraction

Can anyone tell me what settings I need to use, to be able to export this data for use with the SDK resample tool? I'm trying to use globalmapper, however the options to export as Elevation data are both greyed out no matter what I try.

I've been reading notes, threads and tutorials and have since become overwhelmed with all this knowledge, almost to the point of catatonia.

Basically, I'm trying to recreate an airstrip on top of Orbx's PNW addon, but one part of the ground (a ramp down to the nearby lake for floatplanes) is really lumpy, and causes instant death to any amphib trying to access it.

Thank you in advance.

With this stuff there are not discomfort questions. I've trying to get the hang to Qgis (mapping and geospatial software), yes, crazy.
You have to get a file with .dem format, if you can get it directly from the website better, and select that Little área. once you get the dem file just have to use the resampler and the .inf file. it's not as geotiff image which have to edit or process in someway.
Anyway for your case maybe it's not the best approximation if I understood well. maybe using Ade and flatten polygons could make the trick.

Bernardo,

Thank you for your answer my friend, I appreciate the attempt.

I have downloaded the DEM file (in GeoTiff format), amongst a bunch of others all available on the site I linked. I still cannot manage to get the 'Elevation Data' export options to become available within GlobalMapper.

My first attempt included both a DEM file and a .inf file, however, the resampler still threw it back at me, due to what I'm assuming was the fact that it hadn't been re-exported into 16 bit elevation data.

Basically, if someone who knows what they're doing, could access the site I linked previously, export a random patch of land, and have resample accept it, I'd love to know how they went about it.

Thanks very much,
Bucky.

I think a Tiff file is a image file. for photoreal scneneries. but could be wrong, anyway always you will export as elevation data file. take care be wgs84 format always. and copy the inf file for resample from the SDK "samples". I think to be 16 34 bit is not important. sorry if I can't be of more help, but I am a ocasionally user of Gmap. and it's time ago.
Edit: I have seen that you can draw a rectangle and select "CDEM" data, I think they are elevation data. take a look.

The process I use in Global Mapper is as follows:

1. Open the dem files in Global Mapper
2. Go to menu Tools/Configure...
3. On Projection Tab of Configuration change Datum from NAD83 to WGS84
4. Go to menu File/Export/Export Elevation Grid Format...
5. For Select Export Format select GeoTiff
6. In GeoTIFF Options tab for File Type select Elevation (32 bit floating point samples)
7. Just to be safe I select "Interpolate to Fill Small Gaps in Data"

Thanks guys appreciate the help.

mmann: Cheers for the process mate. That's actually what I'm doing, but I always get a 'cannot open' error on the source data, I presumed (possibly incorrectly) that it was due to dodgy source data.

I can't find a problem with permissions, as all related files are set to rwx.

I've attached my output with an image. I tried piping it through '>' but it doesn't provide the true output of resample.exe

I've also attached my .inf

Again, apologies for what I'm sure are very newbie'ish questions, I'd prefer not to ask, but I'd love to have a play with this stuff, and am too dumb to figure out my errors by myself :P

I recommend that you try the following:

1. Create a folder called "Resample" on your C: drive root directory.
2. Place a copy of the FSX SDK "resample.exe" into your new "Resample" folder.
3. Place your file "CAF4_Elevations.inf" into your new "Resample" folder.
4. Create two folders in your new "Resample" folder: call the first one "Input" and call the second one "Output".
5. Place your file "caf4.tif" into your new "Input" folder.
6. Change your "CAF4_Elevations.inf" to read like the following and then save it:

[Source]
Type = GeoTIFF
Layer = Elevation
SourceDir = "Input"
SourceFile = "caf4.tif"

[Destination]
DestDir = "Output"
DestBaseFileName = "CAF4_Elevations"
DestFileType = BGL
CompressionQuality = 97
LOD = 4,12
FractionBits = 2

7. Now use your new folder setup and files for using resample.

You could zip and attach the original geotiff file. i suspect this is a reprojection problem. All elevations need to be Geographic projection, WGS84 datum.

Dick

Thanks very much guys.

Just to be certain, I re-exported the file again with Geographic Projection / WGS84 datum, and then followed Mike's process, and it worked!

I'm not sure what it was exactly, but I'm pretty stoked. Thanks for the help lads.
