• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Cannot get building with specular texture?

Hi,
I'm trying to convert FS9 project to FSX without going back to gmax by using MCX.
It comes out pretty good except one thing.
When I use specular texture and use blend environment with specular alpha to make window reflection (using global environment map), I cannot get the building show. But when I get "use blend environment with specular alpha" to false, the building show up. I cannot find what I do wrong. The texture is there and correctly named.
The other way around is export 3ds and then import to 3dmax set the correct material. Then export to mdl. It works!!! Everthing is correctly shine and window reflect as it should be.
Regards,
Tic

I think there is a bug with special function of blending environment with specular texture and blending with diffuse alpha.
Any though about this? Anyone experience this?

Hi,

Are you sure you use exactly the same material settings when you export directly from 3DS Max? If you enter the same settings in ModelConverterX it is supposed to work. If you think it is a bug I will check it.

I'm sure about that and tested this so many times.

So I converted to 3ds and imported back to gmax. Then I set up the same material and export to mdl. It works correctly. Windows reflect correctly.
Should I sent you the mdl that cause problem when I exported from MCX?

One more thing, it would be very useful if we can save the setting of material to a file. When we use the same material, just take that material setting back and use it for other models.

Now every model I need to set material every time. It is quite tedious job for 60 models.

Hi,

Yes, if you can send the file that would be useful.

I think the material presets are already somewhere on my todo list.

Here it is, Arno.
Thanks for checking this out.
I sent you the bgl file. Please go to VTCC, Thailand and there is no building there but you will see the roof which I didn't use "blend environment with specular alpha" setting.

Hi,

I didn't try in FSX yet, but when I load your BGL file I see that for the specular texture the BGL refers to a PSD file. FSX can not read those and missing textures often result in the object not showing. I would put a DDS file in the MDL for the specular map.

ModelConverterX does not change the texture extension on export, while GMax does that.

That explains the thing I got.
The specular texture is a new one that I just do for fsx and still did not convert to DDS.

It should work now. Thanks for your advice and your wonderful tool, Arno.

Oops!

I did try that, changing from texture refering to psd to dds. Still no building show.

Ok, I'll have another look. Can you send me the textures as well? Else I need to copy some of my own textures to your names.

But there is no specular texture there, did you forgot to include it? Even one missing subtexture can let your whole part disappear.

So what I did is rename one of my own textures to the specular map. And I converted your JPG files to DDS. I then made sure in ModelConverterX that I chagned the extension to DDS for all of them. Afterwards the models shows fine for me (see screenshot).

I did try that, set all the texture right to the texture.dds inside the FSX.
I still do not get the building.

I attached the XML, MDL and the texture inside. Sorry that I forgot some textures last time. I uploaded to 4shared since I had trouble with the attachment of FSdeveloper.com.

Here is the setting that I use:

Thanks for checking this out. It is so frustrated when things do not get what expected.

Hi,

I think this must be frustrating, but I just loaded the model in FSX here and it displays fine. I only had to change the GUID, since the GUID in the XML did not match the MDL. But I made no changes to the MDL file itself.

Oh my god. (actually it should be "my budda" since I'm not Christian...ha ha)
What I missed is the GUID! It's now working fine. I got a good result.
Thanks Arno for checking this out and your wonderful tool, MCX.
