FSX Can't open ADE in FSX Steam

Hi Guys,

Got a wee problem.

A couple of weeks ago I installed FSX Steam Edition and all was well with ADE Version 01.55.4790.

(I've been running FS9 for quite a number of years).

ADE would open with a popup window to select either FS9 or FSX.

I even worked on a new airstrip scenery and all was good.

That is until I installed the latest FSUIPC4.DLL version 4.955c. (unregistered).

I might add , I didn't have any FSUIPC previously installed in the Modules folder.

Now I don't have an option with ADE as it only opens into FS9 and won't recognise any FSX ade's.

I manually removed the FSUIPC files and restored the computer back a couple of days, and all was good again with ADE having the option of either FS9 or FSX.

I even tried the latest ADE v1.65 Nov 2014, but still not able to access FSX.

So I'm a wee bit stumped as I'm not sure what's going on.

Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Pete.

Hi and welcome

I am not sure why FSUIPC should affect which versions of FS you can open. Are you saying that with FSUIPC installed (in FSX:SE?) then you no longer get the version selector?

Hi Jon.

Yep that appears to be the case.

I'm going to manually remove the FSUIPC files again from FSX:SE and see what happens to ADE.

Pete.

I don't recall hearing this problem before

Hi Jon,

I've uninstalled the FSUIPC and both ADE's , done a backdated restore on the computer (could only go back a couple of days) , and then reinstalled both the early and latest ADE.

Still can't get either ADE's to recognize FS Steam.

Both of them open up directly into FS9.

I've run out of ideas.

Trust me to come up with a curly problem.

Pete.

The usual reason for ADE not finding a sim is a missing Registry Entry. ADE looks first for FSX and if it can't find that it will look for FSX:SE. These are the registry paths it is looking for:

Software\Wow6432Node\DovetailGames\FSX

Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator - Steam Edition\10.0

Please check for these in your registry

Thanks Jon,

I'm delving into unfamiliar territory here, where do I look to find these registry entries?

Pete.

Hi Jon,

Been busy with life lately, but I'm finally getting back to this issue.

Didn't use the Reg Edit, but using the Environmental Checker V.1.4.2, I've located the FSX path and that's all accepted.

But the problem seems to be with locating and accepting the path to the FSX SDK.

A friend of mine , who has years of experience in scenery design, sent me his fsxsdk.chm file, but it changes to an HTML file in my system and the ADE doesn't seem to accept this.

We're one step closer but not there yet.

Thanks for your help.

Pete.

Hi Guys,

I'm still at a bit of a loss as to the reason the current path to the FSX SDK isn't working after my initial success of designing one airport.

Any help would be appreciated Thanks.

Pete.

AFAIK the fsxsdk.chm has nothing to do with what ADE needs from the SDK. The first line is looking for the folder with BGLComp.exe in it and the second one is looking for Shp2Vec.exe.

My paths to the SDK are:

C:\FS\FSX SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\BGL Compiler SDK

C:\FS\FSX SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Terrain SDK

Yours should be different on the left side, but after the "FSX SDK" would normally look identical.

Hope this helps,

I tried to upload these pics before.

In the FSX SDK folder I have the BGL Compiler SDK folder and inside that there's the bglcomp.

In the Terrain SDK folder I have the shp2vec.

But as I posted above using the Environmental Checker V.1.4.2 neither of these are accepted , or even visible when searching using the "Set SDK Path"

So frustrating.

Pete.

As George says it is well reported that there is no working SDK with the Steam Edition. You need either the FSX SDK - if you have a copy of FSX. Or download the P3D v1.4 SDK from the Prepar3D site - its free and it the same as the FSX one. The Environment Checker is no longer really up to date for current versions and could be misleading

Thanks for your replies.

Originally I had replaced the FSX:SE SDK's (Environment Kit\BGL Compiler SDK & Terrain SDK) with the Prepar3D_SDK_1.4.4 files.

As I said originally I had successfully designed a new airport layout in FSX:SE (with ADE Version 01.55.4790).

So at the beginning everything worked, with a choice of either FS9 or FSX selection.

But I'm at a loss to the reason I've lost the FSX capability.

Pete.

What exactly is the symptom of this problem? Do you not get a choice to load the FSX version and load directly into FS9? If so, then Jon's suggestion about the Registry is almost certainly the issue. You will need to resolve that one first. I think Jon can give you a workaround to put into the ADE ini file?

There is a blunt force way to have ADE offer all the different sim options. It is no substitute for sorting out the registry entries since you will not only get FS9 and FSX but also all versions of P3D as well
