• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can't open old projects

Hello
I created some projects last year or so before I needed to rebuild my PC (reinstall everything).
Some of my drive (partitions) ended up with different assigned letters after the 'rebuild'.
I now find that some old projects I have will NOT open.
When I attempt to open them I get the following errors-
"Could not create M:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Scenery"
M: is the drive letter where FSX was installed when I created the projects.

Is there an easy way to get these projects to open?

Thanks

Hi John:

By "Old Projects" in this context, IIUC, do you mean: :scratchch

*.SBX files exported from SBuilderX (these must be "Appended" to a blank SBuilderX project SBP file)

...
or the smaller and less complete

*.SBP files auto-saved / manually saved via SBuilderX (these can be "Opened" as saved project files)

NOTE: If the above procedure do not work, you may have to restore "Administrator Permissions" to the file / folder chains on ex: Drive M: that you wish to have access to with both Read and Write permission within your new Windows installation active user profile.

This is best done from within the default Windows system dialogs rather than via various "Take Ownership" scripted / batch file routines floating out in the wild of the internet. :alert:

Hi Gary,

My files are type .SBP and if I attempt to open them (File > Open Project) that is the error I get.

I created them when FSX was on drive M: and now it is on N:
SBX must write file locations in the .SBP file and then expect to find them there when opening the .SBP file.

NOt sure what you mean regarding permissions. I know a little about them but don't quite understand what you state.

John,

I don't have a clue what an error message like that is trying to tell you.

All I've got is: is it possible that you need to reset the paths under Edit->FSX Settings?

Thanks Dave
I already have the paths set up correctly to point to where FSX currently is installed.
I will play around with that to see what happens but the rror message coming out of SBX indicates that it can't find FSX installed on the M: drive which is the drive it was installed on when I created the projects (FSX is now installed on the N: drive and that is where I have Edit>FSX Settings set to.

Hi John:

Although it is not uncommon to have drive letters inherit NTFS file/folder access permissions/restrictions from a prior install of Windows, such that one is required to manually restore 'access permissions' for one's currently active user account profile after Windows is re-installed and drive letters have changed due to adding a new drive device and/or partition, what we might be seeing here 'may' also involve:

* SBuilderX.exe access to the (IMHO un-necessarily 'over-protected' since Windows Vista ! :censored:) "system" sub-folder chain under:

[drive letter:]\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Scenery

...or:

* The "BGLFolder=" parameter value in the current SBuilder.ini file

You may wish to first edit the SBuilder.ini file to change the "BGLFolder=" parameter value to [SBuilderX install path]\Scenery:

SBuilder Menu > Edit > Preferences > click [INI File] button < file opens in Windows NotePad >

[Main]
LonIniCenter=-9.136076 <-- Your project's central Longitude goes here (optional if 'connected' to a live FS flight session)
LatIniCenter= 38.7813203 <-- Your project's central Latitude goes here (optional if 'connected' to a live FS flight session)
DecimalDegrees=True
MeasuringMeters=True
BGLFolder=C:\MyPrograms\SBuilderX314\Scenery <-- Your project's compiled BGL 'active' \Scenery folder path goes here
OriginalTerrainCFG=False

1.) When configuration of your SBuilderX project is completed via editing "SBuilder.ini" in Windows NotePad:

.....a.) In Windows NotePad Menu > File > Save As... > "Save as type" field, set to "All Files (*.*)" (do not click OK yet)

.....b.) In NotePad Menu > File > Save As... > "Save In" field, browse to [SBuilderX install path] folder; double-click to select it

2.) Back in NotePad Menu > File > Save As... browse dialog, click "OK"

.....a.) When prompted to over-write Sbuilder.ini, click "YES" to save your edits to that file.

3.) Exit and re-start SBuilderX (...or the above changes will not yet take effect)

If this does not work, be certain that you configure a shortcut for SBuilderX to "Run As Administrator". :pushpin:

Let me know how these options work for you.

Hope this helps ! :)

Thanks Dave

Well being one to try anything I found that my printer (connected via usb) had been assigned drive M: which is where SBX was trying to access when opening old projects (created when FSX was installed on the M: drive which then was my SSD drive)
I thought that if I could create a folder on any drive with a letter of M: I might be able to trick SBX so I uninstalled all apps and drivers for my printer which freed up M:. I then plugged in a usb memory stick and reassigned its letter to M: and then created the folders SBX was looking for.
That fixed that problem but then I found that the project also contained an image (jpg) file for it was for photorealistic scenery. DRAT I don't have a copy of the required image file which is part of the project so I will have to start again using SBX to create the photorealistic scenery from the start where I modified the created image file by 'erasing' those parts which I didn't want in my FSX scenery (it was of a quarry which I tried to do with a suitable polygon but wasn't happy with).
Then again maybe I will just put up with the best fit built in terrain texture type as I don't think I can be bothered doing again. At least that way I won't have to create a night image.

Oh well worth a try.
Thanks agin.
