• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi...I just installed GMAX for the first time...When I try to open it it says I must register, but the link brings me to a blank page...I'm not off to a good start...

To the OP...Gmax is a great free tool. It is a version of 3dsmax version 4. However, the creation of GMAX was done imperfectly. When they took features away from 3dsmax v4, they broke a few things. Its a great tool, nonetheless, and the majority of us built our sceneries using it. The key is to just learn what's broken so you can avoid those problems. The only way you really learn is by experience, and this board is quick to assist anyone who is trying to learn this and all the other tools, so never hesitate to ask. My only suggestion is to search the site and read the wiki. When someone has done their best on their own, everyone here LOVES to help.

I'll share one of the most famous GMAX bugs, and you'll learn more as you go. The "mirror" tool invoked from the ribbon is BROKEN. If you use it, your model will be corrupt after compile. It may look ok in GMAX, but it won't look right after compile. As you learn GMAX ui, you learn the modifier "stack". Its on the right side of your screen in default configuration. You select modifiers from the drop down menu. That's where you need to go for the function of "mirror". The Mirror MODIFIER works as expected. AGain, the mirror tool INVOKED FROM THE RIBBON at the top of the screen is BROKEN.

i have no chance of tackling the broken parts if i can even open it...ill try the turbosqiud help suggested...thanks

The warning is appropriate, but the Mirror button on the top toolbar is not "broken," it works just exactly like the one in Max2012, which is to say it is not usable with FSX or Prepar3D...

The best thing anyone can do is to right-click on the Mirror button and delete it from the top toolbar. That way there's no way to get lured into temptation.

I have never had any problems with the mirror button if you remember to reset Xform after. But why not use symmetry and place the mirror at an appropriate location?

Symmetry modifier is not in Gmax, sadly. Only Max users have that option. To delete the Mirror button in Gmax, Alt-left click on it and drag on to a viewport: you'll get an option to delete.

Paul, the exact problem is that the Mirror button 'mirrors' everything, including the normals, which is precisely what you'd see in a mirror. In FSX/P3D those mirrored normals will display the mesh inside-out.

The Mirror modifier on the other hand, only mirrors the mesh, leaving the normals alone. :coffee:

Yes I forgot to mention after resetting the Xform I select all the polys and flip them. As soon as you apply the reset Xform and collapse the stack it will become apparent if the normals are flipped. You have to use the Xform in the utilities menu and not the one in the modifier dropdown menu which will not display the reversed normals. This problem does not happen in every circumstance for reasons unknown to me.

Yes Paul, it is "simple enough" (after a lot of effort to learn how!) to "fix the mess."

It's much faster and easier to simply avoid the extra work to begin with, IMHO.

Well Bill, some people are just quick learners and hard headed as well. :p
