• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Changing the Airport Altitude

Hi all,
I have used sloped poly's on a few airfields with greta success, but in those cases I have not needed a runway, I have just used the Gen X background.
The next one I have done DOES need a grass runway.
I have done my sloped poly and that is fine.
I then added the runway and went back over my poly which did not show a big difference, but only part of it showed because I assume the ground is now more natural.
I changed the airport altitude to that which FSX showed me at one end.
Saved and compiled ok.
However one end of the runway is on the ground and the other end is floating.
Now I assume the runway is flat and the ground is not and that is why.
SO how do you add a runway to a sloped poly.

Regards

Short answer is you can't. Long answer is that all elements on an airport are flat - runways, aprons, taxiways and so on are level. The only way I know to create a sloped runway is to use GMax. I believe there are some other ways in FS9 but I do not know if they translate into FSX

ok Thanks Jon.
My next question is, and I do not intend to be rude, but what is the point of being able to have a sloped poly to get rid of the "cliff" effect if you then can't alter the runway to suit.
OR are you just saying you can't ADD a runway and only EXISTING runways will get altered when the airport altitude is changed.

Regards.

PS Yes I understand the the primary purpose of ADE is to amend existing airports and not to create new ones.

FS requires that all runways, aprons and taxiways be on a flat plane at the height of the airport reference point.

Sloping polygons are used only to blend this flat area to the surrounding terrain.

If you do not use AI nor require ATC guidance, all you need in an AFD file is a start point to ensure an entry is present in the FS "Go to airport" list.

George

Thanks George, yes I understand that and have in fact used this method at NEW airfields where I do not require a runway.
Its at NEW airfields where I DO need a runway that is the prblem.

So what you are saying George is that I have done it the wrong way round.
I created a poly then added the runway and whatI should be doing is adding the runway first and THEN the poly.

YES!!!

Err, no.

You need to create a "flat" poly before adding your runway.

Then you need to create one or more sloping polys to blend with the surrounding terrain.

George

Right I understand that now.
So if you would be kind enough to take this a little further for me.
What is the best way to go about this.
For example just flatten the runway area and then work outwards with sloped poly's or
Flatten the whole airfield area and then overlap the edges of that with sloped poly's.
OR something else.

This is how I did LLanbedr:

You will find it difficult to create such a complex pattern in ADE but it should give you some idea.

OOOOH! Llanbedr!

I spent many happy hours watching the activities in and out of there in the early to mid 80's. I used to camp on Shell Island for a number of years and the binoculars were always at hand during the day time. :)

I fly out of the stock FSX version quite often when I want to do some low level valley running but it's nothing like the real thing of course. Any chance you will be sharing the airfield when it's done?

Have tried as per your picture George and although it takes a while is not particuarly difficult.
However I did not get the result I was hoping for so I have more than likely not done it correctly.
I have got a good result by using 2 poly's. One with a fixed altitude for the flatten and another one over and around [sort of] to blend and it looks fine.

May I draw on your experience and ask how far out do you take your blend.
In this case I have just flattened the required area and taken my blend out to just beyond the airfield boundary.

Regards.
