• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS24 ChatGPT Says My Model Must Be In Metric Units ???

I was asking ChatGPT for assistance with exporting my basic 3D model to MSFS 2024 using the Blender Addon. ChatGPT said that MSFS 2024 requires the model dimensions to be in meters for correct import. Is that right, or is ChatGPT making up things again?

The model's glTF doesn't distinguish between feet and meters, so you need to use meters to get the scaling correct in the sim. So ChatGPT is right.

I am not yet certain which may be a greater cause for concern: :)

* Attempting to learn Blender for creation of MSFS 3D content before reading the MSFS SDK Docs

...or:

* Using ChatGPT to learn Blender.

FYI: 3D models utilize Units of Measure; in 3D modeling applications, these can be arbitrarily assigned.

In "The Old Days", when graphical resolution was difficult to achieve, 3D models would be "Scaled" Up, then back Down at completion.

Actual Units of measure assigned to a 3D model would thus vary during the 3D modeling process.

ACES' FS2Kx SDK documentation was notoriously limited and obscure, and often terms like "Model Units" would be used.

However, by default, most 3D modeling applications and applications that use / display 3D models default to Units in Meters.

I certainly apologize for causing you such great concern, Gary, and I must confess... I did not read the entire SDK Documentation. However, I did look through the documentation for the Blender MSFS Addon. Alas! I saw nary a word regarding the proper choice of units that is required to export into MSFS 2024—obviously, an oversight on my behalf. If you would be so kind, perhaps you could guide me to the location.

Rest assured, the next time I have a question of such insignificance, I'll know better than to ask such a silly question on this forum, which is apparently intended only for the highest-ranking experts such as yourself. Oh, by the way, no need for any undue concern. I did not use ChatGPT to learn Blender. I only used ChatGPT for some technical assistance, and it was actually correct! (and provided the answer without being a smart-ass)

Hope you get feeling better...

I did not experience "great" concern, just a trend here at FSDEV, which IMHO reflects increasing efforts by forum participants to use AI to meet (still) overly complex requirements of learning to work with MSFS' SDK and 3rd party applications to individualize their use of 2024.

You may have done yourself a favor, as Google appears to find in MSFS 2024 SDK Docs, little- to nothing- regarding 3D Model Units :

The search function in the online MSFS 2024 Docs shows these results when queried for "Units"

As for Blender exporter(s) targeting use of MSFS' proprietary extensions, Asobo delegates development / documentation to 3rd parties.

Personally, I prefer to use Sketchup for as many tasks as possible for FS development, along with MCX ...rather than Blender.

However, you may find helpful info on use of the Blender Exporter(s) ...here:

I would not consider your question insignificant, nor would I want to consider myself as highest-ranking; we all seek new learning here.

Oh, by the way, no need for any undue concern. I did not use ChatGPT to learn Blender. I only used ChatGPT for some technical assistance, and it was actually correct! (and provided the answer without being a smart-ass)

I did not experience "undue" concern, and I must apologize for not specifically stating "Blender MSFS Exporter" instead of just "Blender.

As for being a smart-a$$, if AI is better behaved than me in providing answers to queries, then that is a good thing.

BTW: I rather liked the way you described that ...in a spirit of enduring good will and generosity by offering honest feedback.

No offense taken whatsoever, and it actually brightened up the latter part of my day, which had gone awry ...despite good intentions.

FYI: I'm given to understand AI is "required" to not reply if a query submitted contains "bad JuJu"; if it does, AI response is suppressed.

I have installed on my FireFox Bookmark toolbar, a button I can press when I do not want an AI reply to my Google query.

https://www.google.com/search?q=dis...MwLjG4B2vCBwUyLTEuMcgHDA&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

I am not certain what the code contains when it is sent via that button is clicked after a query is composed in the Google query field.

But I have read that when 'expletives' are included in queries, the AI replies are suppressed.

One might wonder just what is being sent, and whether it might be more fun to have it reply with a smart-a$$ retort.

Maybe Google could afford to license the C3PO voice from LucasFilm / Disney, so one might evoke something like this: :duck:

I suggest that Google study this Monty Python sketch to learn how one might best conduct "AI Arguments" online:

Hope you get feeling better...

Very kind of you to offer good wishes after my marginal behavior following too many nights of little sleep trying to help some folks. :)
