• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Coder needed for DC-8 50 series project

I am looking for a coder to work on my DC-8 50 series payware project for FSX and P3D. The previous coder has become largely unavailable due to other time commitments (i.e. increasingly busy day job). The work will be paid on an hourly basis when the work is published. Profit sharing is an alternative possibility. I work on it full time and will be able to continue on that basis, so it is very unlikely anything would happen to prevent publication.

The work will consist of the following:

  • XML coding of aircraft systems - at this point chiefly the start-up, pressurization and hydraulic systems. My preference is is to use sim connect gauges only if absolutely necessary. (I need to be able to mess about with whatever work is done for possible expansions or modifications of the product.)

  • Coding autopilot and flight director and some of the radio navigation gauges - these are very simple for an aircraft of this vintage and can use stock FSX solutions. Some of this is already working.

  • Linking various systems (some already coded) into an already coded electrical system. That is to say, making them operate only when supplied with electrical or hydraulic power from the appropriate source.

  • Creation of a fuel and payload loader utility. (I assume this requires C++ programming which is not something I can do myself at present.) There are ten fuel tanks that must be loaded according to a schedule in the manuals.
I have probably left out some items, but the above list will give you a good idea as to what is required.

Systems should generally follow the real world aircraft manuals. I am aiming for a reasonably high degree of realism, but not 100% in every system. Failures will not be modelled. The electrical system is largely already coded by an experienced FS XML coder, who is also a civil engineer. It is complex and to work with it you will need a good understanding of how electrical systems work. I believe the original coder will be available to set out to you (and me) what he has done and how to further implement the system.

Added features to be included either before or after publication could include an automated flight engineer and pre-set aircraft states (i.e. taxi, take off, etc.).

Another optional feature could include integrating the freeware CIVA INS controls into the 3D model. At present the INS is modelled in 3D and displays its readout in 3D but needs to be operated through pop up panels.

3D modelling and texture skills, flight and engine performance simulating are not required. However, if you have experience setting up and coding 3d landing and taxi, lights, that would be welcomed. Nor would I turn away assistance is programming a plausible radar display - I have some video of what it should look like. At some point I would like to implement a working weather/terrain radar, but that may not possible for the initial release.

You should be able to start work more or less now and be able to put in hours fairly conistently over a number of months. You should have experience with this sort of work as I am looking to compete the project fairly quickly and there will not be time to learn as you go. I would appreciate receiving references and some description of previous FS work. You need to be able to communicate in English; I have some French by not good enough for technical subjects. You will need to be discreet concerning the project and keep all files provided to you in a secure manner.

The project will have excellent graphics (at least in my opinion), realistic flight and engine performance according to real world performance tables and should be pleasing to work on.

If interested, please contact me by personal messaging on this forum.

I would be interested in helping you with your project. I have done a number of panels for various aircraft including Boeing 737-800, 747-400, 757, 767, 777, and 787 which you can see on Simviation and Flightsim.com. I have also done a small job for Marco Martini at Flight2000.org. The gauges on these panels are all original work. These panels have included pretty much all the systems you want to do. I have not worked with C++ but it may not necessarily be needed for what you want.
I have plenty of free time and can work as many hours as you want.
Let me know oif you are interested and I can get started right away.

Best Regards,

Gavin Munro

I have replied to Gavin by PM. If the position is filled I will post here. Until that happens, anyone who is interested is welcome to contact me.

Although most of the work is systems coding (for 3D parts and gauges) and is to be done with XML, I should emphasize that there some some bits needing C++ or similar non XML coding and that is the one thing I cannot do myself (at least not yet).

If you are feeling a little adventurous, why not try doing it yourself for those C++ bits and ask for help here as necessary?

In the long term I would like to. But I am trying to complete the project in a reasonable length of time and it would take me a week or so just to get started with C++. I have looked at the sdk and its clear to me there would be a steep learning curve. I have never written or compiled any computer code aside from the fsx xml stuff. Well there was one university course where I had do regression analysis on a computer using punch cards, but that doesn't really help.

I feel proficient enough with the xml coding now (or combing the forums for solutions) that I may end up coding all the systems myself that can be done that way. But I don't want to spend weeks struggling with C++ when I could pay someone to do it in a few or so days.
