• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Confused about the SU license

Hello!

I've been looking into using Sketchup for 3d modelling and I'm unsure if I would be allowed to do so (with the free version Sketchup Make). I'm a bit worried as I used Sketchup to extract a model* which I've been continuing on in GMAX. I would also like to use Sketchup for my freeware projects (I will not sell the files) - is this allowed in Sketchup Make? And is it a problem that I've used the program to extract a model?

Thank you and best regards,
Jakob Böhme

PS. I've been searching the forums and the internet for an answer, but I havn't found a sure answer. The way I interpret the license is that using SU for freeware is not allowed, but I believe many are using the free version. I just like to be on the safe side!
*The model was a part of a bigger model and I have the owners permission to modify the files.

Hi,

From this site:

http://www.sketchup.com/license/b/sketchup-make

I get this:

"Trimble Navigation Limited and/or its affiliates ("Trimble") gives you a personal, worldwide, royalty-free, non-assignable and non-exclusive license to use the executable version of the Software for non-commercial use only. Non-commercial use means: you may not sell, rent, lease or lend the output of the Software or the Services. If you are a for-profit organization of any kind, or an employee of a for-profit organization using the Software or Services in that capacity, you are engaged in commercial activity; therefore, in order to use the Software and Services, you must purchase a SketchUp Pro license."

This pretty clearly states that you can use Sketchup Make if you are not involved in any commercial activity, and give away the results. Freeware is not considered commercial activity (it's a hobby), so I think you are in the clear. Since you do not "sell, rent, lease or lend the output of the Software or the Services" (lending usually means for money), you should be fine. You are giving it away.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your answer! I was just in contact with a friend who is a lawyer and he stated the same thing.

Best regards

It is very kind of Rick to offer his help to Steve for this project.

FYI: Sketchup version-8 (32-bit) is the last version allowed to be used for both freeware and commercial purposes without a license.

The original version-8 package is the 'fastest' working build compared to newer "Make" or 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 and/or 64-bit versions, and can be downloaded here:

http://www.oldversion.com/windows/google-sketchup-8-0-16846

BTW: AFAIK, that is the last issued and most current updated Sketchup version 8 released:

http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49608

NOTE: Sketchup version-8 can run on Windows-XP if desired, although some (optional) plugin Ruby scripts may use DLLs that require more recent Windows component functions, and some dialog GUIs may require newer versions of Internet Explorer.

PS: When Google transferred Sketchup to Trimble, some server addresses changed for the Geolocation feature, and a simple fix must be implemented by the end user in order for that to function properly: :alert:

Hope this helps in case anyone here wishes to use Sketchup version-8 under its intended EULA, and also wishes to do so on Windows-XP. ;)

Hello Jakob:

AFAIK, if you need to use a newer 32-bit -or- 64-bit version of Sketchup or Make (only) for loading of a larger 3D model data set or importing a 3D model file format not provided by Sketchup version 8, when you immediately export your 3D model data from that newer 32-bit -or- 64-bit version of Sketchup or Make into a Sketchup version 8 *.SKP or a *.KMZ file format, those file formats can be imported into Sketchup version 8 for the actual work process, and eventual output as a finished product without restrictions on one's use of the output for commercial purposes. ;)

You may also find that Sketchup version 8 32-bit is a much faster version, with a greater number of compatible 3rd party Ruby plugin scripts available.

Hope this helps ! :)
