• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Control tower transparency issue

Hello all,

You haven't heard from me in a while and thought you were finally rid of me and my 1000's questions huh :)
Not so fast...I was just working hard on the coast guards station KECG Elizabeth City, NC.

I created the control tower in Sketchup. The windows are transparent and that works fine. However I cannot see what is inside from the outside. Inside are radar consoles and people.
I know they are there, I can see them if I "get inside" with my aircraft. That's issue #1.
I know it's feasible, MS default towers have silhouettes inside.

Issue #2, when I look inside from the outside the inside walls & floor are transparent even though a texture was applied to them.

Sketchup model converted in MCX. I set Default to Transparency.

Any help will be much appreciated.

When you work with transparency: First making the inside, then outside.

Now select and copy the external windows. Remove old exterior windows. (This will solve the problem. )
Compile to FS

Hi and thank you for your input. I need some clarification though because I don't quite understand what you are saying.

When you work with transparency: First making the inside, then outside.
I suppose you are saying that is what I should do? I also suppose you are talking about applying the texture to the inside 1st then the outside?

I have applied the texture only to the outside. For some reason my Sketchup automatically applies the same texture inside.

Now select and copy the external windows. Remove old exterior windows. (This will solve the problem. )
Compile to FS
I'm lost there. If I remove the external window I don't have a window anymore?

Hi Patrick,

Was this for FS2004 or FSX?

For FS2004 it should work to make sure that the names of the textures you use for the inside are alphabetically before those of the outside.

Hi Arno,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that is for FS2004.
Wow that is something I would have never guessed. So it seems from what you are saying that textures are loaded in alphabetical order.
In my model I had all on 1 texture so I guess I'll just have to create a separate one.

Thanks for the tip,

Hi Arno,

I have the same problem with sfrenchie. Build it with sketchup and MCX for FS2004

If see from inside building, I can't see the aircraft. And when try see from outside, I also can't see the building model on inside building.

And I try to make simple transparant texture like on this picture (use alphabetically name for inside texture).
The part of aircraft are not visible when you are inside the glass. And also another the building (terminal, tower etc) is also not visible.

Maybe I have some mistake. Could you help me Arno?

Thanks before.

Hi,

The problem with the user aircraft can't be solved, that's something inside the engine. The aircraft is always drawn after the scenery and that means such transparency issues will happen.

How about the texture problem, I have rename the texture with Ai Ao Bi Bo, but some texture inside building not visible from outside. My problem is same like sfrenchie.
Read and try many tutorial about transparant texture but is not work on my side.

Hi,

Are the other buildings that are not visible through your texture parts of the same MDL file? If they are separate MDL files, it is the location of the reference point that determines the drawing order.
