• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Converting dds to bmp for FS9.

I was given 5 objects in x file. I ran them through MCX & they appeared as in 'dds.jpg'.
dds.jpg
Having converted the dds to bmp via DTX they looked like the 'BMP.jpg' so something's wrong !
BMP.jpg

I tried 2 in FS9 & they look like those in 'BMP in FS9.jpg'.
BMP in FS9.jpg

Without textures they appear white of course & very accurate.
Can a superior being advise me what to do to get the textures to show properly ?

Thanks,
Terry Wallis.

Hi Terry:

I'm inclined to regard Arno as the "Superior Being" for expertise in use of MCX for conversion of MS-FS 3D Models and textures. ;)

AFAIK, MCX (still) uses a MS-FS2Kx SDK ImageTool version (the 'Gold Standard') for inter-conversion of mapped FS texture Materials.

IIUC, you are using Martin Wright's DXTBMP utility:

...which may technically also be capable of performing the desired inter-conversion, but IIRC, there is more than (1) DXTBMP version.

However, I believe it would be a go(o)d idea to see what Arno would advise on a work-flow to use MCX for this particular task. :teacher:

Hi Gary, MCX had produced the mdls & LibraryMaker the wonderful bgls - see 'without textures 'jpg.'

The problem is the textures I got from DTX (a web suggstion) don't work in FS nor MCX.
The objects themselves are superb & very accurate.

The problem is textures.......

Terry.

Hi again, Terry:

Indeed, MCX can convert 3D model geometry and any / all mapped textures into the desired graphic format for any MS-FS version.

AFAIK, this can be done either within a normal MCX 3D model import task session, or via a MCX 'Wizard' Batch Convert task session.

If you attach the 3D models with all mapped textures in a ZIP / 7Z / RAR archive via a PM to Arno, I'll bet he can help sort this out.

Hi,

I am responding to your first post. Try flipping the textures vertically and see if they then appear OK. DDS textures are flipped vs BMP textures.

Hello. I didn't know that but I'd noticed the gable ends were upside down so I flipped them with this result
but it's not the whole answer.................................... grab_016.jpg

OK Gary. I'll PM a zip tomorrow morning..................................

Gary.....I'm not sure what you mean by 'attach the 3D models'. Do you mean the mdls or the building BGL containing the 6 mdls ?

Hi Terry:

If you have the 6 MDLs packaged inside (1) 'building' BGL, then IMHO, that would be the file to archive, along with all original textures currently mapped onto those 6 MDLs. :)

OK Gary. I have 2 dds files, 1 brick & 1 rendered. I converted them to BMP & will send the 4 files.

My cursor hovered over a texture & I realised it was 2048 x 2048. I reduced them both to 1024 x 1024 but that didn't work.
I've sent Arno a message.......
