• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Guys

Am I right in thinking that FSX models made by GMax or FSDS will have a guid embedded in them? Is it possible to get an FSX model where the guid is all zeros and if so does that make it unusable?

Thanks

Hi Jon,

Sorry to burst in on your thread but it's, sort of, relevant. I've been working with gmax and tried a dummy run to make a model and, yes, it requested a guid. As I am very new to gmax I had no idea where to get one, I haven't read that far in the formidable SDK literature, and I opted out of the procedure. This gave rise to a question in my mind as to how FSX deals with guids. For example if I assign a guid to something and then upload that something for others to use and the new user already has something with that same guid, what will FSX do to resolve that situation. If any one can enlighten me and, of course, Jon I/we will be most grateful.

Guids are by definition globally unique. This means that the chance of the same number being generated again by chance is cosmically small. So provided a good guid generator is being used then you can ignore the chance of someone generating the same one unless they do it deliberately.

There are a few cases of the same guid for different objects in FSX (basically ACES used the same guid for a different object from FS9 so loading the FS9 library results in two objects with the same guid. As I understand it FSX will just use the object that it gets to first (so the one in the library with the highest priority)

Yes, both programs will produce an embedded GUID, and of course you can set to be all zeros...

...so...

The question is why is that something you would want to do??? :coffee:

Use the LOD name tool script that comes with the gamepack. That has an option to set the friendly new and it will also assign a new GUID for you. The GUID is supposed to be unique, so you do not have to worry about sharing the object.

Yes, else XtoMDL will not even compile it into a MDL file :). So you are required to have one set.

A GUID of all zero's is just one of the possible values. I don't think that will make it invalid though.

Hi Folks

Jon -
Going back to your original question -
Am I right in thinking that FSX models made by GMax or FSDS will have a guid embedded in them?

Is it possible to get an FSX model where the guid is all zeros and if so does that make it unusable?
Was this for use in context of reading mdl files ?
e.g. For data lists in ADE or similar.

I know you'd specifically asked about FSX models,
but on a general note for previous FS versions,
and being totally ignorant of such matters. :D

ISTR seeing references that in some cases
a tool doesn't insert the GUID automatically,
rather the user would have to,
through some menu action,
manually add the GUID.

It may have been related to upgrading from older versions.

Could there be a scenario for either tool,
where a mdl contained no GUID ?

And on whatever was reading the model
by default substitutes all zeros ?

Many thanks

I was looking at FSX mdl files and wondered what the implications of a zero guid are. FSX mdl file contain a guid but FS9 ones don't as I understand it.

Thanks for your input. Although I'm a couple of stages away from actually needing the guid it will help when the time comes. You've confirmed what Jon has said about the guid being unique so I need not worry about it conflicting with anyone elses'.
