• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Custom 3D bridge

I created a custom 3D bridge. I removed the default bridge using ADE and put the new bridge in its place. The AI traffic move up to the bridge but run through the approach up to the bridge instead of going up the approach to the bridge. How do I fix it so AI traffic use the bridge?

Does your custom bridge have a hardened platform?
Also the traffic vector needs to line up with your bridge. If it doesn't you'll need to exclude existing traffic line and make a new one that goes over the bridge platform.

I am not sure what a hardened platform is. I made the model in Sketchup. The traffic vector does line up perfectly but they just drive through the approach instead of going up it.

Okay I am getting somewhere now. I used MCX and created an auto platform. It only created an auto platform for the horizontal main span of the bridge, not the approaches going up to that span. I created a manual platform and aligned it with one of the approach spans, setting its angle so it would sit just on top of the surface. This manual platform runs from the road, up the approach to the main span. The cars now come up to the bridge, drive though the approach spans but now they will jump up to the main span which is 75 feet above the water, drive across the main span and then drop off it back to the ground. It looks like the auto created platform is working but not the manual one. Any ideas?

Ok you are using Sketchup. Make a single texture for the entire road bed of the bridge. Something that looks like pavement with lines that you can tile works really well. The with the auto platform function, you can use the drop down to select that specific texture. Now you can adjust the normals to be much less "strict," the default is only almost exactly horizontal and you want a platform that will glom to any slope, so long as it has your roadbed texture. It may take some trial and error, but the ultimate goal is something like this:

It will produce this effect:

I have done everything except this part and I don't know how to do that. Can you elaborate on that? Did you try clicking "Auto platform..." instead of "Add"? It seems pretty self explanatory. There is a "filter normal upwards" counter with the default set at 1.000 and you will want to change that number. A slope as gentle as yours would likely do fine at .7 or so. Then there is the check box, that you will want to check and then select your road bed material. Below that are the "cancel" and 'run" buttons and you'll want to click the run one.

Yes I did all that and so far I have tried .9, .8, .7, .5 and .1 and the cars still drive through the approach.

After I changed it from 1 it did place the platform over the entire road surface from one end to the other, not just the center section.

You don't have to compile the model. You can see if it works in the MCX view. If the platform does not conform to the road surface, remove it or re-import the model and try another number. If high decimal values don't work, try .1, .01, etc. There are recent threads where we have discussed this in detail if you want to, search relevant terms like "auto platform." Consider that at this point you almost have it, just a matter of fine tuning.

I bet I know what the problem is, did you scale the model at all when placing it on the sim? if so......don't, it messes up the location of the platform, typically to a much lower height. Rick's explanation is spot on.

David, I did not scale it up or down. It is still the 1:1 scale but thanks for that heads up. I will pay particular attention to that in the future.
