• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Custom Autogen Building roofs

After a good look at Arno's config merger tool, I am keen to start customising some autogen for my NZ scenery, and my next release will include custom vegetation, probably just a few to start with. The merger tool makes it such a simple system to add my own trees, he's done an amazing job.

The other thing I'd like to make a start on is local autogen buildings, in particular warehousing etc which generally just has a slightly peaked roof here, most commonly iron.

Has anyone got some tips for adding to RoofDescriptions? I could figure this out myself, but a head start would be good:) That's next week's project, so I have the weekend to see if someone already has some good tips....

Can you actually "add" roof descriptions? I thought one could only replace but admit I am only speculating. That's why I stopped using 3rd party stuff like ORBX as they would overwrite instead of add. Just commenting here as I have only briefly scanned the sdk on this subject.

Hi,

Yes, you can add new roofs. I did it for the (not yet released) scenery of Nantucket by Bill Womack. You can just add your own entries for the roofs and use these in your autogen files.

Thanks for that, I'll keep persevering now that I know it can be done, although haven't managed to make a single roof appear yet...

Ah, it now works! I didn't think that it would make a difference as the autogen system hasn't really changed much in a few years, but my GMAX roof didn't work until I re-exported via MCX...
Thanks to Arno for some amazing tools, making my life a lot easier.

So toprob,

great to hear you got it working. In short, you create your own roofs following the SDK, assign a new GUID. But how do assign your roofs to auto gen buildings? (not looking for a detailed explanation, just curious what binds them?)

You add a 'roof entry' to roofdescriptions.spb using Autogen Configuration Editor, and create a new 'group' and 'region' entries as appropriate. The SDK describes how to add an entry to AutogenDescriptions, and it's a similar process:)
You can also create a material entry in 'materials.spb', as the material/mapping is added to your model using XML. Sounds complicated, but just examine the default roofs in the Config editor and it'll become a lot clearer.
Then in Annotator you just assign your new roof guid from roofdescriptions.

Hi,

Autogen models must have drawcall batching enabled, else they do not work indeed. So that explains why the GMax models don't work by default.

Like toprob says adding a new roof is not that hard. I just copied a default roof and changed the things that differ for my roof. I still plan to make some tutorial about this, but I ran out of time :)
