• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

dds vs bmp, DX10 preview

This question has probably been asked, but lo, I find nothing that fits exactly.

So here's my issue.
I've bought I couldn't tell you how many 3rd-party aftermarket aircraft, and quite a few of them still use bmp textures.
FSX seems to want dds textures. I've heard it thrown about that it will use bmp's only after searching 2 other places for a dds.

I am not finding this statement to be true. I have quite a few aircraft that use bmp textures, that display all white with no textures (everything else, though, it seems).

I can uncheck the DX10 preview option and they display fine, but the model preview is not the only thing that suffers when I do that.

How can I modify/convert/something to these textures, or even alter the model to make it work with DX10 preview on?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
those addons simply are not compatible with DX10 (actually nor FSX...)
It's not just a texture format issue
I guess

Let's give it a try anyhow.

Yes, FSX looks for dds files first.

What kind of bmp files are you referring to? DXT3 or 888-8? You might try running them through Imagetool or DXTBMP to find out about the format.

Then, in all likelihood, using Imagetool to convert them to dxt5 dds should do the trick.

Is that enough info for you or do you need more detail?

Also, do you know if the models are compiled for fsx? If they were compiled with the fs9 makemodel tool they won't work with the dx10 graphics engine. The fsx .mdl fomat contains information not present in the fs9 version that is necessary for full material and texture support. Drawing models with BGL opcodes will no longer work.

There is enough that doesn't work in DX10 Preview mode that most people don't use it. But some do, but only with strictly FSX aircraft, etc.

White mdls in DX10 preview mode is a symptom of an FS9 model, when used in FSX.

If this is the case (most likely) It doesn't matter what texture format or where you put it.

It is a bit naughty because many of these models were FSX stamped, on the basis that they were compatible.
