• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Decompressing BGL Files for MCX

Whatchamean decompress?
MCX can import BGL files. Hope that helps.
I have a scenery bgl that I have tried to import into MCX and I get an error message stating that the file is compressed and MCX is unable to read. In the thread that I link to in the original post, Arno was going to look into how it was compressed and then see if there was a way to "decompress" those type files so that MCX was then able to read them. The thread ended there and I was simply asking if he has found any way to fix that.

I'm sure he'll get around to answering sooner or later.

Hi Ed:

Arno should be back from vacation soon:

As for decompressing legacy format BGLs prior to importing with MCX, you may wish to check this out:

http://simviation.com/fs2000utilities_gen1.htm

"FS2000 BGLINSTALL.EXE compressing and decompressing scenery files. The detailed scenery files in Flight Simulator 2000 are compressed to reduce the amount of disk space required. The files are not encrypted, just compressed. If you're a user or developer who has modified and worked with .bgl files in previous versions of Flight Simulator, you'll need to use this free utility to compress and decompress .bgl files for Flight Simulator 2000.. File size 111737"

PS: If MCX will not open / import certain decompressed legacy format BGL files, further de-compiling them into *.SCA (SCASM source code) files may allow MCX to then import their content:

Hope this helps ! :)

Hi,

No, I didn't find a way to let modelconverterx decompress them. There is an old utility called bglzip that can do it however. So you can use that command line tool to decompress and then modelconverterx should be able to read them.

Since compressed bgl files are old and only rarely used I decided to not try to add further support for them. I just added a warning when they are found.
