• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Default scenery library objects disappearing

I have encountered a strange problem.

I'm just finnishing up an airport scenery project in FSXA with ADE 1.65. I've been using Instant Scenery v3.03 to place some stock scenery objects at, and around the airport.

Suddenly a few selected objects have disappeared from view (at least the textures, because you can see a black shadow beneath where they should be) when I run the scenery (both in flight mode and in slew mode). The objects are the military jeep (veh_truckmilitary01) from the vehicles_land.bgl (strangely though, the front windscreen is showing) and every type of parked cars cluster (Veh_ParkingLot*) from the FSXP_Vehicles.bgl.

I tried to run the scenery in Prepar3D v2.4 and the same problem happens there.

I can solve the issue by taking away several different bgl files from the scenery. When adding them back the same problem happens again.

I have tried to delete the scenery from the scenery library, restart and readd them, but problem sticks, both in P3D and FSX.

However, when I run Instant Scenery 3.03 in FSXA, everything appears normal. I would have guessed this to be a Instant Scenery problem, but since I don't have Instant Scenery installed in Preapar3D it is hard to conclude.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello:

IS3 will "manage" (and therefore 'control display of') any objects placed by BGL files it has created / edited ...until such BGL files are moved somewhere new that IS3 "does not yet know about".

By default, after every re-start of FS, IS3 will NOT display objects placed by BGL files which remain within the same folder that IS3 last created / edited them in.

Thus, the objects inside BGL files that IS3 'manages" will not display until one activates IS3 on screen, then one must "Open" that scenery object placement file for editing in order for the objects to be seen after FS re-indexes and refreshes the flight scenario.

The need to manually re-open such BGL files which remain within the same folder that IS3 last created / edited them in ...is eliminated by moving the files to a another new folder chain added to to the FS Scenery Library GUI and set "active".

IS3 will not "know about" and/or "manage" those files until they again are opened for editing, and an object is added / moved / deleted etc. ;)

Hope this helps ! :)

Thanks for the reply.

I still don't see why the same objects fail to show in Prepar3D v2.4 which has no IS3 connection whatsoever.

Hi again:

To explain further, IS3 uses OpenGL to display scenery objects independent from the Windows DirectX sub-system otherwise used by FS.

You have indicated that IS3 is able to display the models in FSX but not P3D (because IIUC, you do not yet have IS3 installed for use in P3D).

< FYI: In addition to FSX and FS9, IS3 is reportedly now able to be used in P3Dv2.x as of the IS3 version 3.03 update: >

Are you stating that in FSX the objects are seen:

* when the objects are selected for use in object "placement mode", and the IS3 GUI is on-screen

...and:

* when you have manually "opened" the placement BGL containing the objects in question and the IS3 GUI is not on-screen ?

If so, this may indicate that there is a problem with those scenery models when rendered by FS via DirectX.

In some cases IS3 is able to display the scenery models when DirectX cannot.

When working with custom scenery objects there may occasionally be problems with the models in question involving mapped textures, either from being:

* in the wrong file format

...or:

* missing entirely from the \Texture sub-folder

BTW: The \Texture sub-folder should be locally paired with the \Scenery sub-folder containing the scenery object library BGL beneath a "top-folder".

In the case of FS default objects in scenery object libraries, the \Texture and \Scenery sub-folders are located beneath the main root [FS install path] "top-folder".

However, since you are describing use of FS default scenery object libraries, it is less likely that there should be a problem with the models or their mapped textures, so that is rather suspicious for some other interference with IS3 and/or BGLComp-type XML placed objects ...by a yet to be determined factor.

But you may still wish to import the scenery BGLs for the objects in question into Arno's ModelConverterX (aka "MCX"), and examine the textures to verify whether they are all displayed properly in the 3D preview, and to ensure that the mapped textures are in a *.DDS or *.BMP format which FS can display on the model at run time.

This might also help identify whether there may be a conflict with a separate texture having the same file name that may be located in the \Texture sub-folder for your scenery project local Area (or another Area set "active" in the FS scenery library GUI stack of layers).

Also, you may wish to test whether you are able to display the scenery objects in question via IS3 within P3D in a manner comparable to that seen in FSX by updating IS3 to version 3.03 (and selecting both FSX and P3D when installing the required modules.)

After sleeping on this one, I recalled some obscure scenarios reported by others here, where multiple parking lot objects were placed and there were intermittent or total failure of those (and IIRC other nearby placed objects) to display due to IIUC, an internal FS limit on display of more than a (variable) number of those types scenery objects in a local area.

You may wish to review the threads linked immediately above to see if there may be a way to fix the problem by simply reducing the total number of "suspect" scenery objects placed in the local area of your custom scenery project.

Also, in the latter thread above, George may have identified some alternative placement options that might merit consideration as a way to populate a scene with multiple objects without hitting the same curious display limitation as seems to be incurred by use of the parking lot objects (thanks, George ! ).

Hope this might help resolve the scenery object display issues for you ! :)

I think your sleep might have done you and me good Gary! I have used these objects extensively, so that might be it!

That is probably why removing some of the bgls helps solve the problem, it doesn't matter which, just that I remove some of them, hence reducing the amount of similar objects in the same area.

Thank you very much!
