• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Deleting Stock airport - Yes/No ?

Hello,

fairly straight forward question here - would one need to delete the stock airport (FS9/FSX/P3D) for his/her own airport to work properly ?

Obviously stock buildings would need to be deleted/excluded, but what about Ground Polys, like taxi/runways ?

Would you just "cover up" the stock textures with your own, custom created GP or delete everything ?
I guess ADE would be the tool to use then ?

Maybe that's a stupid question but due to VTSP beeing my first project i simply don't know.

Thank you guys

Are you just editing an airport that already exists in your sim? I have customized a lot of airports in P3D v4 and v5 with Airport Design Editor. It's very easy to learn as you go, and all you have to do to get going is tell it to load a stock airport then enter the ICAO code to get going.

If you use P3D, runways, taxiways, and even many buildings are fairly accurate in version 5 unless you're working with oddball private strips. Version 4 isn't so bad, but you often have to change the orientation and length of runways, but that's pretty easy if you have a background image.

For that, I use the Russian program SASPlanet for that as you can easily select the region you need to turn into an image and if you ask for a Google KML to accompany the images, it will generate the longitude and lattitude measurements that ADE needs to accurately orient the image.

Thank you for your answer,

yes, i'm editing an airport that is already in P3DV5, VTSP to be precise.

But let's say i'm editing/creating another airport - what if the stock runway is placed wrong (off course) ?
I'd create my own custom ground poly, put it in the sim and then still have the incorrect stock runway visible - would i just delete the stock runway or adjust it so it's covered by my custom GP ?

So basically, my question is, should i either try and cover up the stock airport GP or delete it ?

Here is what I would do, and it wouldn't surprise me if other designers here have a much better plan:

Download a copy of SASPlanet. Once you have it installed, find your airport and make a polygon selection around the area you want to work with (such as runways, taxiways, aprons, and facilities). If I am editing/creating a small airport I can set the level of detail at 21, but larger airports need about 20 and you'll probably have to chop it up into smaller files to stay under the 7mb limit for ADE background images. Make sure to also have SASPlanet include a KML file which will have the lattitude and longitude coordinates you need to precisely install it in ADE.

Once you have placed the image, you can see if you need to rotate/lengthen the runways. This is done by double-clicking the runway and just tweaking the length/width/heading. Unless someone chimes in with a better workflow, let me know if you get stuck on anything and I can help when I have time.

Good luck,
