• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Desperate - Textures not appearing

Dear all, I am desperate...

I developed a part with FSDS V3.5, applied textures showing correctly in the 3D preview of FSDS... then I created a scenery object file (.mdl) with FSDS V3.5 compiling with xtomdl.exe of the FSX Deluxe SDK... then added it to a object library with LibraryMaker, then placed the object with Instant Scenery into FSX and... the object part appears in correct dimensions in FSX but NO TEXTURE is applied!!! Help!

Note:

The texture is correctly placed in the texture subfolder of the object-library scenery folder!

The texture is displayed/applied with other scenery objects of other scenery authors! I took an existing texture for this test!

What am I doing wrong?

Daniele, a scenery design newbie begging for help.

Hi,

Normally I would say check if you turned it into a DXT or DDS texture with mipmaps and if it is in the correct folder. But since you mention it works fine on other objects, it sounds like nothing is wrong with the texture itself.

So in that case there should be something wrong with the texture assignment. Unfortunately I am not using FSDS myself, so I am afraid I can't help much in where it might go wrong.

Dear arno

thanks for reply. Yes the texture shouldn't be the problem, as I used an existing and already correctly working one...

I think something goes wrong while compiling the .mdl file with xtomdl.exe. It must be some problem that results in FSX not finding the correct texture even if it is in the correct subfolder of the scenery! Is there any way to check the integrity of a .mdl file? Opening it with an editor doesn't help much...

Thanks a lot

Daniele

POssibly, just possibly, re-check the texture. Is it by any chance in 24-bit (16M color) format?

Even when using an existing image, it's very easy to do a mis-step and re-save in an inappropriate format.

Also, MAKE sure that the texture name assigned in FSDS is the same as the image file. An extra space, maybe a dash instead of an underscore....

Note that I'm just stating several "obvious" things that "of course" experienced modellers "never" do .... (right?)

Dear Felix

no, unfortunately it's not (as it is usually) that obvious mistake! The texture format is correct and the name too (opening the model file .mdl and library file .bgl with an editor shows a lot of crap, but the file name of the texture is readable and correct).

Help... I really suppose that FSX "doesn't find" the texture file... but why?

Daniele

Hello all

I tried to interpret the .mdl file, here is what I see:

Hi,

So it seems the texture is assigned correctly. Are you really sure that the texture is in the texture folder belonging to the scenery folder where you BGL is? If it is in another folder then it will not work.

Else, can you attach your MDL file. Then I can take a look at it. Posting its content like you did is not really helpful :).

Dear Arno

I really appreciate your help, thank you.

Yes the texture is in the subdirectory named "texture" of the object library directory. The object library is found, because with Instant Scenery I can place the object and then after creating a new scenery file it is displayed correctly in FSX, just not the texture!

Enclosed I send you the zip of the complete object library subfolder. The object is called "test.mdl", the library "untitled.bgl", and the corresponding texture "SDT3_023.BMP" (this is a texture of MoCat's Snow Dog Scenery I used only for test reasons, supposing that as it is displayed right in his scenery it should exclude file format problms for my test!).

Again really big thank yous...

Daniele

Hi,

I checked your object and it is a cube that has been textured on one side. The other sides are without texture. So make sure you are looking at the correct side.

If you still see it completely untextured in FS, then it could also be that you still have an old BGL containing the same MDL loaded. In that case you could be looking at that old (and maybe not yet textured) version. Just an idea...

Dear arno

thanks for your checking, how did you find out?

Well in FSDS I applied the texture to all 6 sides, and there they are correctly displayed! So it must happen while producing the object for FSX out of FSDS, the texture application to other sides must have gone lost somehow... I'll try to follow up this problem. Thanks a lot for your hint!

Daniele

Dear arno

I checked again, and... you are right, on one side the texture is displayed!!!!! Super. Now the problem is, in FSDS I applied the texture on all 6 sides! Why is only one side showed? Thats's the big question. I will bring this up at Abacus Support, perhaps they will have an idea on where the problem is.

I'll post the results if I find out.

A grateful Daniele, thanks arno! :):):) I think we came closer to the solution of this clue...

Dear arno

the problems are mostly solved, it was a combination of wrong file formats while designing within FSDS and the thing of not displaying textures if applied to all sides of an object (this is still hanging at Abacus support)...

I am a newbie, so sorry bothering you, but your hint was really the decisive help. So thanks again. :D

You *may* be experiencing some sort of texture bleed.

Can you post your fsc?

You might try to, in turn,

in polygon mode, select say, the front polygon.

Go to part mode and assign the FRONT texture.

Repeat - go to polygon mode and select the left polygon
Go to part mode and assign the LEFT texture.

etc.

When you apply a texture to an object with polygons selected, the texture gets applied top JUST that (those) polygons.

(gmaxspeak: select polygons, apply UVWmodifier; apply UVW Unwrap: then mesh select, select polygons, etc.)

Dear all

I sorted everything out and now I do not have any problems any more. There were several reasons for my textures not appearing, and as a complete newbie in scenery design, I just fell in every possible trap:

DO NOT'S I DID: :censored:
- missing night texture, if FSX doesn't find the corresponding night texture it doesn't show even the day texture....
- texture file naming, never use german special signs like ä, ü or ö... FSX is american, it doesn't understand foreign languages and doesn't find the texture...
- wrong bmp format, FSX doesn't like 24-bit mode...
- put ALL the texture files in the corresponding subfolder, FSX doesn't look anywhere else, of course!

So that's it, now everything is displaying fine. Thanks again to all of you for your prompt support.

Daniele
