• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Differences between Development Mode and In-Sim

Hi everyone,

for my airport I would like a pretty detailed mesh and it was working quite fine in P3D. But in MSFS I somehow can't make it work. When it is looking okay in the development mode, it looks totally different in the sim itself. Is there a setting that I can set, that gives me the same results as in development mode?

You can see that this hill is pretty flat and wide and also includes the two little paved ways at the right side (the lamp post is between them)

In developmentmode it looks completely different. You can see that the two paved ways are completely flat (as it should be) and the hill is not that prominent.

It seems that within dev mode the terraforming appears doubled up, as if it is applying your changes to what you've applied before. So actually it's dev mode which is incorrect, you've probably just over-adjusted the mesh to compensate for this bug. Which you can't do visually. There are a couple of ways I've used to tweak the mesh, for simple things I just work out roughly how much I need to tweak the elevation outside dev mode, apply that even though it looks wrong, and re-load the sim to test it. Or for trickier polys, I'll delete the one I need to tweak, rebuild/restart, and just redo it.
But generally now I just get annoyed and flatten the entire airfield:)

Thanks, it seems like the "Build all" button doesn't do what I thought it does. When I build my package manually outside of the simulator, the mesh was a lot better and mostly what I saw in development mode. But it still all is a bit wonky and easier to go the all-flatten route.

A bit late for this post although am seeing a very similar issue . The terrain mesh is excellent in DEV mode in scenery editor (ie picks up gully drains parallel to the runway , larger drains on airport perimeter , subtle natural drains , even the curve of the runway from one side to the other) but when compiled in SIM its almost all flat. I've noticed so far the detailed terrain elevation in DEV mode only appears on projects that have vegetation and water polygons - where the real elevation is needed perhaps. Spent hours today trying to get the terrain to stick in the SIM , checking terraforms , manually editing Airport/runway elevations , renaming BGLs , checking project structures. Removing all packages back to default scenery remains very flat and featureless.
Its like there is a conflict in the terrain and the DEV project temporarily finds the detailed elevation buried in the SIM somewhere but falls back to default in SIM. I'm now considering importing external detailed elevation despite getting so tantalisingly close in DEV mode...

EDIT : solved this problem by recreating a new airport and deleting the default runways which must have included a terraform of some sort. (Not sure why the original runway deletes did not work, but it was done last year).
FYI DEV tools that helped were Options/Ground/ then enable "Altitude isoline" and toggling "Enable Terraforming". Now to hopefully manually adjust the runway source xmls to transfer the runway textures ,taxiways, aprons, parking, runway lights etc etc to the new airport package.

The good news is the native mesh is impressive at the airport of interest , its a bit sad that the default airport terraform covers most of it.
