• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Disappearing Fence

For the first time, I have experienced a problem with the boundary fence disappearing at an airport at a wide range of view angle. Suspecting that this was issue that had been discussed before, I did a search uncovering results indicating that it was an FSX glitch dependent on geographic location that could not be overcome. Is my perception of forum discussions on the matter summarized correctly?

Some airports in certain areas do have this problem. I don't think anyone ever came up with a fix. You can see the fence at one angle but it will disappear at another angle.

I found a workaround (with some side effects). As best I can tell the problem seems to be a terrain altitude z-order (front to back ordering) issue. FSX thinks that something (presumably higher than the fence base) beyond the fence is blocking the view of the fence. Ordinary flattens do not seen to have enough priority in the rendering system to fix this. The following works in the cases I have found:

1. Place the plane in front of the fence around the middle of the area it disappears.
2. Angle the plane so it is in the middle of the left to right pointing where the fence disappears.
3. Add a 1 meter square transparent closed helipad around 200-300 feet directly in front of where the plane is pointing.

The above has caused the fence not to disappear in the cases I have worked with. In some cases I had to play around and have more than one helipad.
Apparently the helipad flatten has the same high priority as a runway flatten and prevents the issue.

This has 2 side effects that I know of. First it puts a 1 meter square "H" at that location. Secondly it probably does some degree of terrain flattening. Since it is probably a decent distance from the airport in most cases this should not be too much of an issue. In the cases where it is nearer to the airport it probably can be hidden by careful use of other objects.

It may also cause some menu issues if you are flying a helicopter looking for a helipad (I have never tried that so I do not know if there is a helipad menu).
