• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Do 3D Objects Animate?

Hi,
It seems that I've posted something here about a jetway that will not move, or animate, and doing the search does not find it. I guess I'll just do it here.

Anyway, I've mentioned that I've downloaded a jetway from the 3D Warehouse and would use it for the KPVD airport I just completed. I purchased the Instant Scenery 3 and it seems to work very well at helping me to place them precisely where they should go. I've placed about 4 or 5 of them and I wanted to test them to make sure they would animate or move to the door of the plane. When I used the GSX and selected to operate the jetway, it would not do anything. I've checked in the Customize This Airport in GSX and the box that says "This Parking Space has a Jetway" is selected. I've also tried using the CTRL+J keys and the jetway still will not animate. So, my question is that do these objects suppose to animate, or do they require code that makes them animate? The jetway has many, many separate moveable pieces and I can actually move them and rotate them in Sketchup. If they cannot be animated by the sim, I may just go back and use the default ones. At least they animate but I hope it's possible to make those I've downloaded from the 3D Warehouse animate.

Hi Ken:

To find your previous thread "Jetway Will Not Animate", note the query string I used with Google: ;)

FYI: AFAIK, animating a 3D model for use in FS / P3D is very complex, and requires use of special features and coding that is thus far only implemented by use of GMAX/3DSMAX, FS Design Studio 3.x, or Blender.

While it 'may' be possible to utilize a 3D model from 3D Warehouse by inter-converting it via MCX, one must ultimately output a 3D file format from MCX to be imported and "rigged" for animations by one of the above applications. :pushpin:

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the information. I guess I'll just use the default jetways in ADE. Even though they don't look as good, they at least will animate.

Yes, as Gary implies, it is possible. I also use Sketchup and I'll use the example of an airplane propeller. After defining a model and optimizing it for the simulator, I'll export the fuselage as one .dae and the propeller as another. Then from MCX I export the propeller model in FSDesign Studio format, compose the animation sequence in that software, export as .fsc and then use the Join Tool in MCX to combine the parts. If I need to modify the animation tag, MCX can accomplish that as well.
Admittedly it took several months to grasp an understanding of the animation software, but once mastered and in retrospect, if you are already modelling in Sketchup, animating your models in any of the softwares - some people do the same thing with Blender, is about the same level of complexity. You should try it.
