• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Does weather have any influence in "active runway"?

Last night I was messin' with Kai Tak airport (Fly Tampa), and set the aircraft to the "active", which was rwy 31. So that got me thinking (scary, I know).

How does one change the active in P3D? I mean if I read correctly, FSX uses a complex formula of airport attributes, weather and wind to determine the active, right? But there are no weather options like wind direction or wind speed in P3D.

So P3D has no default weather other than themes I guess. So I went to ADE, closed take-offs and landings for 31 and "bingo" I was on rwy13 (and so was my AI). But I know that in FSX that closed runway can be overridden with external forces played upon it but not sure about in P3D. Forgot to test this with my Opus weather to see if this can override my selection.

Thoughts?....

I am pretty sure weather is settable in P3D... and it makes me wonder why would it not be settable from UI.

Anyway as far as I can see, the main thing FS looks at is the wind direction. In case of calm wind, it would normally assume wind to be 000/00 and chose the runway that is closest to northbound. Things like IFR approach consideration and such only kicks in when the weather turns IFR.

Also it will look at runway material, but I can't really think of any airport with combination grass/hard surface runways in different directions.
