• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Dynamic Lights and Effects

Messages
458
I have been using effects as per tutorial here.

The problem I am having is, no matter what I do the light just stays in the same spot. I even removed the spot light and the light continues to just illuminate one area (see attached). This image is with the settings in the second attachment.

I have tried the same with the spot light and it does not move the light.

Any guidance?

Here's what i did - maybe that helps:

Import my .mdl file into MCX
Add spotlight and position it where i need it
Adjust rotation, make it shine downwards otherwise it might look like it does in your picture
Save as .mdl (MCX will produce the .fx file at that point)
Use the "Convert and place wizard" to get my .bgl file into the sim
Paste the created .fx file into the /effects folder

Ah! So my original fx file created via the Visual fx tool will not matter. The MCX created fx file is the one that works?

I never worked with that specific tool, but if you create an effect in mcx that's the one to use.

If you like you can attach your .mdl file of your lightpost here so i can attach a spotlight and show you how i did it.

It's not a really good screenshot, but placing a spotlight on top of your lightpost works - It's way too bright, but that's something you would need to adjust to your own liking.

What i did:

Opened your .mdl file via MCX
Add spotlight (add light, then change the setting from point to spot)
Adjust position and rotation
Adjust other setting to your own liking (colour, strength, range etc)

Save object (as P3D4.4 mdl)
.fx file is created

Use the convert and place wizard to place that file
Don't forget to copy the created .fx file into the /effects folder of your P3D installation

Yes I did. Is there a setting in P3D I am missing?
There is indeed a setting called "dynamic lighting" at least there is in P3DV5. (so there's gotta be one in 4.4 and up)
It's under Graphics -> lighting

Which version exactly are you using ?

Ver 4.4. That is ON of course. If you can see it in your set up I must be something I am doing wrong which is causing this to not display.

I am completely stumped why the lights are not displaying in P3D even with your MDL.

I have DL on in my settings. I see the lights of other airports like the Flightbeam SFO.

OK disregard the above. I used the light in another area and it worked. Go figure.

Not sure why that would be the case.
