• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Effects in FSX

I was wondering if there is a way to place an Effect in a certain Lat/Lon.

Can it be done via Simconnect (haven't seen any documentation about this) or Offline?

Also, do effects always have to be associated to an object?

Thanks

I think it's possible. In SDK is an example for a fire in KSEA. The XML File only has the coordinates and the name of the effect file.
If you drag it to bglcompiler you get an bgl. Put it in FSX/Addon Scenery/Scenery, set your airplane to the KSEA Airport and you are direct facing the fire effect.

Thanks

I never compiled a BGL. I did what you mentioned and doesn't showed up.

Any insights? Thanks

Like in SDK, you must put the fx_ForestFire.fx from E:\SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Special Effects SDK\Samples into your FSX/effects folder. This effect normally not in the effect folder.

After researching a little bit, you can create and destroy effects on the fly in FSX via code, at a certain Lat/Lon/Alt

If anybody could find it useful just let me know.

Federico,
Could you explain "via code" ? I use effects for missions of the 91st Bomb Group in multiplayer and
place them as needed with xml code which I then compile with bglcomp.

The compiled bgl gets placed in the users active scenery folder for a particular mission. The effects controllers are
triggered by proximity. Typically I place controllers for FLAK as well as for explosions on the ground at the
'target'.

I am always interested in expanding my knowledge is this area and creating/destroying effects on the fly
would be of interest to me.

Basically you load the FX file allocating some space in memory and then with a workaround C++ function you draw it at a certain location. Then you can destroy it. No need for compiling it.
