• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Elevation / mesh problem

Hey guys,
i'm in the developement of a small general aviation airfield and mostly everything works as intended. But there is one thing that makes me wonder and I could not find a reason or solution for this by now. Each time after opening the project, right when loading the scene in the editor the ground of my airfield changes and my plane falls through the ground by approx. 20 feet. Also having the modded scenery in the packages directory makes my plane stand below aircraft by players with the standard scenery but the altitude indicator in both planes shows always the same altitude. Any guess what's wrong here?
Thanks!

@AlphaBravo unfortunately, I have the same problem. When I load the scene in the Editor, the ground elevation changes. That's very strange. I don't know what I did wrong that causes this kind of effect.
In the following images you can see the airport before I load the project (on the left) and after importing the scene in the Editor (on the right).

Hello:

When you state:

"the altitude indicator in both planes shows always the same altitude"

..do you mean both your aircraft and that of another MSFS multiplayer aircraft on the same ground surface displayed on a computer which does not have your scenery loaded ? :scratchch

Hello:

Perhaps your scenery contains an Exclusion Polygon that excludes a default Polygon that has Altitudes assigned to its vertices, and you have not replaced it with a new Polygon that has Altitudes assigned to its vertices ...to provide a new flatten ?

You may wish to review the YouTube video on MSFS-2020 'Terraforming' ...linked in this post:

@GaryGB thanks a lot for your reply! If there was such an Exclusion Polygon, would it be listed in the Scenery Editor or something? I get the same effect even if I load the SimpleScenery sample without any changes.

Hi again:

Here is some more informative discussion on terrain work-flow options to be considered:

Regarding your statement:

"I get the same effect even if I load the SimpleScenery sample without any changes."

...I cannot explain how any scenery content in the SDK "SimpleScenery" package could cause the terrain display anomaly.

I would recommend first searching for mis-placed scenery content in the Community folder chain which might have been overlooked.

If that does not reveal an explanation, exit MSFS and try deleting the rolling (not manual) cache file, then re-launch MSFS from Windows Desktop.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! Since I didn't have either any sceneries in my Community folder or placed any polygons in my scenery while editing, I went directly to the rolling cache setting. I deleted it as you suggested and restarted MSFS. It works nicely now!

In my first encounter with the Editor, trying to create my scenery I accidentally added a rectangle with terraforming effect, which I immediately deleted. It seems that for some reason MSFS kept showing the terraforming every time I opened that scenery project after that incident even though there wasn't any rectangle anymore.

Thanks again!
