• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Engine idle speed/prop feather

I have recently downloaded a turbo prop float plane which will not remain stationary when the engine is at idle. Actually I downloaded TWO of the same aircraft. One remains stationary when engine is idling and the other (far better model) which will not.
I can stop it from moving forward if I manually drag the feather lever back.
Is there a method to set it up (other than creating a flight) so that it starts up with the feather lever at a particular setting.

Please note I have removed a question regarding removing display of opaque prop seen from 3D cockpit.

Thanks

Actually it is quite normal for float planes to move when at idle. It is not unusual for them to do this in a bit of a circle if they are twins while the second engine is starting. Therefore it is important to be heading away from obstacles when starting engines. Turboprop planes have more idle prop thrust than pistons because the prop does not really idle.

Thanks Roy,
Yes I have a twin turboprop as well which also moves forward.
I was just wondering if you could configure the aircraft to have the pitch set at fully feathered on startup (other than settings up a flight).

Also the other DH2 single turbo (different author) doesn't move forward until I increase rpm although the pitch lever and some other panel objects are missing even though it is just on of those drop into simobjects/aircraft folders containing everything (well obviously not).

Anyway not to worry as I found and downloaded another DHC2 single turbo which starts up in reverse thrust and does not move anywhere at the idle. Same author (Premier Aircraft Design) so I don't understand why their others (same aircraft) are different (dhc-2A_turbo_beaver_tofino_magnum). Sure this may go against what happens in real life but it will do me.

Thanks again.

Hey! Try:

minimum_on_ground_beta = 1

in the propeller section. This will set beta = 1° when on ground and idle. ( = 0 will also work. set any reasonable angle)

Thanks Mario
Unfortunately it didn't work.
Tried it on a DHC6 twin turbo.
minimum_on_ground_beta was set to 1 so changed it to = 0 and that made no difference.
Anyway I found a DHC2 single turbo which doesn't move forward and minimum_on_ground_beta = 1 on that aircraft.

Never checked this, but perhaps the sim is not on the ground if the aircraft is on water

Try minimum_on_ground_beta = -5. This may actually be a realistic setting for a float twin otter (I do not recall the actual value, but remember something of this nature differentiated the land and float versions. I have worked on a DHC-6 simulator for work...)

Thanks Mario, That didn't make any difference.
I think that I will forget this aircraft (Twin Turbo Otter) and use the DHC2 Turbo Otter which doesn't move off by itself.
When I have some spare time I might compare the prop and engine sections of both aircraft.cfg to see what differences there are.
