• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v3 Failing to load .dds textures

Hi Guys until the other day I was able to load aircraft from P3D v3.3.5 and all their textures into MCX (modelconverterx_latest_development_release.zip) just recently due to some reason they now no longer appear, im not sure what settings have been changed by accident.

However thinking along lines of a complete reset by uninstalling then re installing it would set it back to defaults, but that didnt work either, even after a fresh download and install it still presents the same issues of no textures loading

Is there something in the windows registry I need to remove to complete a settings reset to MCX, or is there something I missing in the settings, Ive attached a screen shot of the default cessna and the warning messages of the failed texture loading

If you need anything else please let me know as I have no idea where to start looking as Ive never touched the settings of file structure of P3D as it all worked fine until the other day

Prepar3d does not include a C172 in any versions. You can probably see your textures by selecting a set in the livery drop down.

Rick Ive been using MCX for a few yrs to do painting I know about the drop down menu, And yes P3D doesnt have the 172 however ive imported it over,

until 2 weeks ago all textures where showing no matter the aircraft or object, now I have to go into options and then the texture settings and select each texture folder for an aircraft or object in order to see the textures

this is what the problem is where before i didnt have to do it

Check in MCX options - texture settings, that "BMPDDSEquivalence" is set to "True"

no difference set to true or false

is there any way to revert to default settings, even uninstalling ie deleting the folder and all its contents the settings remain the same when i unzip it the download again

it was only working 2 wks ago fine

Matt it is important to give feedback, there are nuances to MCX of which I am aware that I won't trouble the thread with if they don't apply. Clearly MCX is reading instructions from the .mdl file about which textures to load and it is loading the ones for which the model has correct paths.

This means that it is specifically a paths issue and it is why I'd need to know if you were able to see the liveries using the drop down. Please confirm that this happens with all, or at least several other aircraft. Are you importing the model or the aircraft.cfg into MCX?

every aircraft and every object(mdl) in p3d

the only way for it to load the textures of a plane I have to go into options and then the texture settings and select each texture folder for that plane ie texture.1 texture.2 and so on its ignoring all textures in the simobjects folder, even when i set the texture settings to load p3dv3/simobjects it still fails to load textures

ive tried placing mcx in the OS drive and then in same drive as P3D, no joy even placed it in the root P3D folder no joy

You did not say whether you import the .mdl or aircraft.cfg, so I have to test these conditions myself. When I remove this string from the TextureSearchPath, MCX fails to load textures when I drag/drop the .mdl into the MCX window. When I restore this string, MCX loads textures as expected. It is reasonable that that path would be lost upon a fresh install of MCX, however it should have been present when the problem started. Since it is possible that a poorly configured aircraft.cfg caused a model to load without textures, prompting you to re-install MCX and loose those paths, I'd check that next.

[MCXTEMP];texture;..\texture;..\..\texture;[FSXPATH]\texture;[FSXPATH]\effects\texture;[FS2004PATH]\effects\texture

Rick,
1, I use the import tab in MCX, but that doesnt matter if when i drag objects into MCX the problem is identical
2, no texture loads for all aircraft, helicopter, ship, car truck or anything in simobjects, this also includes effects
3, when i try and re install MCX the previous settings prior to deleting are still present, I cant get default settings to reset which i have been using for the past several yrs
4, my texture paths are the same it was 2 wks ago, and they are identical to what you posted which i have been using for the past several yrs
5, the only way to get textures load is the enter the texture oflder of the aircraft texture ie texture.1 into the texture path field

Sounds like an odd bug in MCX?
I don't think so. Arno opened up the path search to relieve a problem kind of opposite to Matt's that some people would have. I believe the situation was that people wanted to not have to be overly specific about where to store textures. The consequence is that MCX picks up "false positives" and it is just a matter of nailing those down. My clue was that Matt's software would find some of the universal textures but not the model specific ones.

The MCX settings are stored in C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\SceneryDesign.org\. You'll find folders with ModelConverterX in the name there. You need to remove these to restore to default settings. If you install MCX in the same location it will use the old settings, if you install it in a new location the default settings are used. That's how the .NET settings work.

Not sure what exactly happened here with the search path. But I would suggest to not fiddle with the search path setting that much. I myself have never changed it from the default value in the last years and it always works.

Thank you arno, that was what I was looking for early in the piece, however the texture folder on my desktop was an un expected hiccup which was over looked early on in the issue

This forum saved my bacon!
Had the same problem and not a clue as to how to restore the TextureSearchPath...until I read Arno's reply above. And I totally agree...dont fiddle with the search path :)
Thanks Arno!

Sorry but I can find the path either..deleted the files inside :C:\Users\unc1r\AppData\Local\SceneryDesign.org and reset and did not touch the texture search and i have textures all over the place and MCX still can't find them?

Thank you!!
Bob M.

Bob, when you say "reset" does that mean a total "new" install? Mine was fixed by installing MCX is a totally "new location" (different folder). Upon initial startup, you are forced thru the simple setup stuff.
Hope this might clarify what fixed by issue with not being able to find the texture files.
