• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Fighting piracy

How bad is it in the FS add-on world? As I put the finishing touches on a project I've spent nearly 3 years on, and am going to try to raise college funds with, I want to know that my work will not end up on a bunch of "file sharing sites", especially one in particular that I am thinking of.

Hi,

I think it is a problem for FS addons as well, especially for the popular ones. I don't have exact figures about it, but it is always a problem.

Hi Jon.

I think the piracy problems are present only for the most popular addons. So if your addon is popular, you would have already made some money from it.

So maybe the piracy is not such a problem for you, in this case.

Maybe zipping the files with a password key would be enough to stymie the lamer attempts at piracy.

Well, this is true :P My old sceneries that are still up on fspilotshop sold a fair amount when they were first released, but have kinda dropped off to very few now.

I am still looking for the trick how to BGL files are not easily copied.
May be to separated them or make a dll file using installer. :D

Or perhaps register only for buying user pc to combine between their hardware.

good luck~

You want to know how bad it is?

the pirate bay:

32 pages of FSX add-ons and I don't even know if that's all of them. That's not counting FS9 or items don't say FSX in the description. Piracy is here to stay and don't delude yourself it will ever be stamped out. Fortunately, most people are honest enough not to go this route. I don't have the figures, but if these designers are still in business, then I guess it's possible to make a go of it even with piracy being this rampant. I know it hurts but it's just something else that needs to be accounted for in the business model. It's ridiculous, that's how bad it is and until some of these 'enlightened' European countries get on the ball, it will not stop. I'm all for freeware, but these people use the excuse 'Information should be free' as a justification for stealing. In their mind, they're fighting the good fight for the downtrodden everywhere. I wonder if I walked into Best Buy and walked out with a copy of Windows 7, they would buy that excuse?

Ryan, those who trot out that line about how "information should be free" have obviously never had an original thought in their entire lives...

crazy bump

i recently purchased crazy bump...personal use...but in my initial search for it

i was annoyed..no angry. at the number of sewer sites offering hacked and
cracked free downloads...

considering the cost of hardware for your average upgrade/system..
software can hardly be described as expensive...with some notable exceptions
of course...information,freely given, is a triumph of the human spirit, its called
altruism...but theft is stealing...and if a piece of software is too much for your pocket, find a cheaper alternative...if you cant, earn some money save up, sell your possesions. nobody but a fool can be so desperate for a piece of
software,to stoop to stealing it...except those with no values......jim

What the pirate parties are saying is that copyright infringement isn't a good excuse for censoring the Internet.

What censors are saying is that Internet power is not a good excuse for pirates and piracy

freedom

with freedom comes responsibility.....
censorship has always existed, since two humans communicated with each
other....some call it tact or diplomacy...
a very few lack this, requirement for a sentient communicating life form..

laws are not made for the law abiding...they dont need laws...censorship is
not for the self censoring....they try not to gratuisly offend by actions or words..

the question is not censorship itself, but how far should it go,and who decides.?..thats a question for all of us...jim

Too general a statement, I think. Plenty of moral people has disputes that need some kind of "rule set" to settle.

Many countries censor the internet. China ,Iran, Myanmar, to name a notable few. All examples of what I hope the rest of us don't become. But there is no excuse for stealing what is not yours.

Bob

It is not about 'censorship' but about 'ownership'. That's something pirates are deliberately ignoring. I am sure they'd use different wordings if I would take their car or home and open it for free for anybody to use. Or even worse, charge rent for it !

As to answer the OP: within hours, count on it. ;)

There is a specific FS software pirate that I would like to take down. He knows what he is doing is wrong, and when you call him out on it on any forums, he just taunts and says that nobody has stopped him before, and it's doubtful they ever will. The man has a name, an address, and a phone number. I've reported him to authorities multiple times, but I suppose they have yet to arrive at his door and carry him to prison for his actions.

What more legal action can possibly be taken?

Our respective law systems are seriously flawed. Until that gets corrected, criminals are often better protected than law abiding citizens...... sad fact.

I actually called him one time... used my amazing mickey mouse impersonation to attempt to convince him that he had won a free trip to disney world.

I don't really blame law enforcement for the situation. Keep in mind, it's only been twenty years since the internet really started taking of. They may be a little slow to adapt, but it's an issue that is complicated at best. In fact, saying it's complicated is like saying a church tower is tall, then looking at Sears Tower. This is something that will never be solved until nation on Earth agrees and that is not likely. You can censor it in the US, but as sure as stuff is pirated, ways can be found around those restrictions. This new technology is unlike anything the world has ever encountered and it's going to take time to figure it out.

I for one am in favor of some censorship on the net. There has been a movement for some time to have all porn sites relegated to a .xxx domain. Is that censorship? I would love to not have to worry about what my 8 yo twins are going to come across while we are on the internet (yes, they are supervised).

The issue of "censorship" is an entirely different one to the stealing of intellectual property.

There is only so far you can stretch a constitutional right to "free speech" to allow your actions, and I'm afraid that theft is probably "a bridge too far"

The often touted line that these are people who "wouldn't buy the product anyway" is just complete rubbish, as anyone who has seen their product pirated will attest.

The time it takes to develop an application has no bearing to a generation that have had everything handed to them ... so everything appears ripe for the taking. Until laws change ... and systems are in place to make it easier to prosecute offenders, piracy will remain a part of the reality of trying to make a living from software (of any description)

Now .. if all software went straight to pirate sites, there wouldn't be much good software out there, now would there?
