• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Finally, after what seems like months (it was only two weeks) I got my "MIDIfied Pipe Organ" working again. In celebration, I would like to share an .mp3 recording of the first piece of music I played on it. It is my own arrangement of "God of Our Fathers."

Caution! This is very loud as I pulled out practically all the stops on this.

Positiv Manual: Trompette en chamade
Great Manual: Tutti (this means everything!)
Pedals: pedal reeds & bombarde

God_of_our_Fathers_Postlude.mp3

This is a customized Conn Artiste two manual, full pedalboard, MIDIfied console. It is powered by three P4 3.2 computers, running custom SoundFonts I have digitally recorded from some of the world's finest pipe organs.

Because of cascading hardware failures, I had to pull the ancient Sound Blaster AWE64 cards because they are no longer supported by Vista (no driver for 'em!) I had to code my own SoundFont loader software so I could use the default on-board "sound card."

My PC speakeers are less than useless for this recording. I think one of them melted. May I put it on a CD so I can listen to it on my theater system? Also I would be interested in the short version of how you recorded the instruments and what organs they are. I did some study of pipe organs way back in high school and college (when E.Power Biggs was still popular). But have been out of the loop for a long time.

Another musician! Sounds powerful, although the trumpet sound needs some improvement imho.

I can't wait to finally get my piano delivered from Germany my fingers starts to get rusty. Must...play...

Happy Queens birthday to you all!

Any mention of Pipe Organs
automatically conjures up this image for me. :D

Forgive me Bill
its the collar that does it. :o

Hey Bill,

Not exactly my kind of music :->, but sounds great.

I gotta ask, why 3 computers in that setup? I would think one computer, running something as simple as VSTHost.exe with a VSTi Sound Fount player and either a real ASIO audio device or the ASIO4ALL audio driver (which makes the windows/vista sound system behave like an ASIO low-latency audio device) would be more than enough power - although I imagine that writing your own sound font loader/player was probably a lot of fun :->. Or are some of those computers actually handling the MIDIfication duties instead of the sound generation duties?

Of course you may burn it to CD if you wish.

I used a Tascam DAT recorder and recorded ten second samples of every pipe in each rank for each "voice." Several years later, I used Vienna Soundfont Studio v1.0 to create the soundfonts. The current version may be found here:

http://www.soundblaster.com/products/software/subsoft.asp?id=2

The following is a list of the organs sampled:

1. Marcussen & Son Organ / St. Stefanuschurch / Moerdijk Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands

2. Gottfried Silbermann Organ, St. Georgenkirche - Rötha, Germany

3. Bosch-Schnitger Organ, Vollenhove/Overijssel

4. The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

I've also combined the voice derived from the above into the Jeux v1.4 SoundFont created by John McCoy. Unfortunately, AOL has "killed" John's website, so I can't reference the list of organs he sampled... :(

Ah, but such things did not even exist when I began this project! I had to do everything the hard way, designing my own interfaces, designing the circuit boards, etching the traces, and the building the bloody things!

The reason for using three 'puters? Simply because the sheer amount of data being shoveled into them all at once created chaos with the output. Even an AWE64 sound card couldn't handle the load, and frequently entire notes would be dropped...

As a result, since P4 machines were relatively inexpensive, I decided to simply use one for each manual, and one for the pedals... :D

If I were starting out fresh, I would undoubtedly choose a simpler approach such as you've suggested.

The trompette en chamade is rather too "brassy" in that recording. I'm not sure that I've managed to get the soundfont engine tweaked as well as it could be.

How do they sound to you in this recording after doing a bit more tweaking?

Menuet from Suite Gothique

This is a spirited wedding recessional designed for a large group to exit the church. Instrument: Marcussen & Son Organ / St. Stefanuschurch / Moerdijk (Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands)

Wow, That is nice!

And the "power" is really impressive! Sounds like a huge old "monster" played in a gothic church.

:scratchch just wondering: don't you have an aircraft to build? :D

Yes! I've spent the entire weekend enjoying myself, but I do need to get back to the salt mines in the morning...

Just to show I'm not a stuffed shirt who never has any fun at all, picture this...

I once played this as the Recessional after Mass one Sunday many, many years ago...

Just a Closer Walk with Thee (Jazzed Version)

Positiv: Ripieno II (pos)
Great: Swell Chorus
Pedal: Fonds de Gros Terce + Ripieno II (ped) + Reeds 16'+8' + Bourdon 32

This is what I use to emulate a "Theater Organ" sound...

Finally, I actually had a request at AVSIM. Always willing to oblige if possible, here it is...

Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring

Registrations:

Positiv: Spitzflote 8'
Positiv: Trumpette 8' + Prinzapale 4'+2'
Great: Plein Jeu (g.o.)
Swell: Jeux Doux
Pedal: Fonds de Grox Tierce

Impressive, Jim! I hope I live long enough for AOI to complete the restoration and can hear it in person!
