• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Flatten around airport ?

Hi, I have FSX-SE and my "hometown" is Borlange Airport [ESSD].
The problem is around the airport, its large canyons/craters....and its original.

I have ADE to correct little things on the airport itself, but i cant do anything about the mesh...

So my question is:
Do i need like SBuilderX or another program to edit/flatten the corrupted surface.?

Thanks.

I think i tried that 2 days ago, but i can do it again after work. I dont see mesh/terran "outside" of the boundryfences, on Google Maps its a small lake near the airport but its not showing up in ADE for editing....hmm well i look it up later.

Thanks again.

If you only want that your airport is flat, then you can use the flatten feature of ADE. If you want however to edit more (for example add lakes,...) mesh editing is the way to go. But before getting into mesh editing, please read yourself into the topic via this wiki article for example.

Ok, i tried that from Scruffyduck yesterday....but i think i'm did something wrong...or perhaps i'm just stupid.
When i did a polygon outside of the airport (place i want to correct), exluded the autogen...compiled....started FSX:SE....wow got houses and trees on the runway...haha....I'm at work atm, but can someone just start FSX and go to ICAO: ESSD and just see outside aorund the airport....and maybe link to some good step by step tutorial for this??
Note, airport itself has the right altitude.

Thanks again for the help.

I am not 100% sure if you did what you need. What you did: you excluded the autogen around the airport so that generic trees & buildings are "deleted" in the area you choose. What your wanted to do according to your first post and the thread title: flatten an area on/around an airport. This means you want to clean an specific place from any mesh, so that it is a flat area.

Generally it is always best to have (at least one layer lower than you actual scenery) an exclude for the default airport in order that nothing interferes and nerves your work. The flatten tool is always nice to have but I am not sure if that is what you need. Maybe you should consider going for a mesh (either by doing it on your own or by downloading one from avsim.com (for example) and then add this as system requirements for your scenery). Also remember that people might have mesh tools on their own like (FSGlobal, FSGenesis,..) and that this area might already have a very detailed mesh.

While looking now on Google Earth (since FSX is not on this PC) I saw that the lakes are really near to the airport. However I am asking myself, why not adding an exclude (for everything) at least one layer below the actual scenery. Then add a layer with mesh, landclass and waterbodies and then the actual airport (incl. buildings, ground layer (if available)). You then have a to do a bit more but I really believe that the result will then even better.

Yeah i want to "straighten" out the area around the airport due to the "elevation" problem.
I try to add some screenshots later after work.

Hmm its not the elevation i think...must be something with the mesh....maybe they thinked " ok we have the terrain, lets put an AirPort on top of that ... Done" :)

ok we have the terrain, lets put an AirPort on top of that ... Done" :)

Which is exactly how it is done! In FSX, the terrain always gets placed first and then the airport gets placed on top. If the airport is relatively flat then things work out pretty good. Unfortunately, many airports have a noticeable slope from one end to the other and this is where things start to get ugly (literally and figuratively) in FSX, where all the default airport and almost all addon airports are set at a constant elevation (flat as a pancake).

To overcome this problem, without resorting to sloped runways with their AI incompatibilities, I set the airport elevation midway between the highest and lowest elevation points and then use sloped polygons created in SBuilderX to blend and smooth with the surrounding terrain.

Hmm, i cant get it as i want...(i have only used ADE, SBuilderX for 3 days :P)....can someone go to ICAO: ESSD and look...and perhaps give me some "mini tutorial" how to straighten this out and what software i need for that....

I think this is peace of cake...if u know how to do it....:P

Ok, now i am in deep water i think...i poly around the airport and did a flatten...compiled....aaaaaand...no texture at all in that area....just plain black....i'm thinking to just fly :P

The problem is that there is no airport background in your ad4 file.

The default flatten is a joke. Inhibit 0601 Base and you will see your airport (but without the background and autogen suppression):
