• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSDS 3.5 - demo version?

Messages

Hi, I'm fairly new to FSX (and Microsoft FS in general), and would like to try my hand at creating some scenery objects. Is there any sort of "demo" mode for FSDS that would let me play with the program a bit before purchasing it? Even if I can't save objects, etc. - just something to get a feel for how easy (or hard) it is to use?

Thx,
Scott

FSDS Demo

There's nothing for a recent version (that I'm aware of), but this ancient update http://www.flightsimdownloads.com/pub/AbacusFSDSUpdate.exe for v1.6 will run in demo mode ... the "look and feel" are very similar to the current release. I found it whilst trying to get hold of the old afx import plugin, which wasn't included, though I did get a copy of it later from Abacus and have used it succesfully with this version of FSDS to generate fsc files for re-import into v3 !!

Chris - as a side note, if you need to convert an old afx, and have VASS-Gold version 1 (the original version of VASS that worked with fsc files), it had/has an afx import utility, much better than the afx import plugin. That's what I've been using.

(Then again, I'm a pack rat - I still have AF99, FSDS1/FSDS2/FSDS3 installed )

Felix,
My part-retired machine still has FS3, FS4 and A&AF ;-) but, unfortunately, despite queries in many places (admittedly, not here) I'd not been able to aquire a copy of VASS Gold v1. I effectively jumped from many happy years with FS4 straight into FS2004, with very little between, so missed out on a whole raft of stuff !!

Nevertheless, the afx import module provided me with what I wanted/needed at the time ... something to start from to help familiarise myself with FSDS. I've subsequently used MDL2DXF and CVA_Convertor with various degrees of success, for my own entertainment, to import some otherwise unavailable aircraft into FS2004 and re-animate them. I've got some fairly wierd stuff flying as ai on my computer ;-)

Chris - you might want to write up to Abacus. The original VASS, that worked directly with the AF99 afx files was sold through an online publisher. However, Abacus worked with the developer to distribute the VASS-GOld, the version for FSDS.

IF you need afx files converted, let me know.
