• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSDS3 in FS2K2

Can anyone help?
I can't get my scenery projects to appear in FS2K2 they appeare fine in FS9 but I want to be able to use the reload option in FS2K2 as it takes forever to reload FS9 and I tend to lose patience and F it off

Yes, that is correct. The new XML/MDL scenery format of Fs2004 does not work in Fs2002. So scenery made with FSDS3 will not work in Fs2002.
 
Actually, it is compatible with FS2002... sort of. You can export as a .X file, which can be loaded into the FS2002 version of makemdl.exe, and then compiled as a .bgl file (you have to provide the lat and long, of course). I didn't use the FS2002 SDK very much, but presumably there is a way to add these objects to a library, to make it a little bit neater.

Also, FSDS3 has an export as .bgl feature. From the help file: "If choosing the BGL format, the latitude and longitude for the BGL is specified from File | Project Properties.". This sounds like a FS2002 SDK export to me. However, I was never able to get this to work. The "export as .x file" method does work, and I used this to create my textured ground polygons on my Chiang Mai scenery.

Yes, that is an option indeed. Making a library out of the Fs2002 output is not very easy, it requires that you use FsRegen, but at the moment that tool is hard to get (download site is down for quite a time already). So unless you really need to make something that works in Fs2002, I would advice using the Fs2004 techniques.

The BGL export options also uses the Fs2004 XML format. It just hides the process of making the MDL and XML for you and makes a BGL file right away. If you are placing only one object that might be easier. But for complex projects it is better to make a library (we don't want a single BGL file for each object we make of course).
 
Cheers for the advice I've got both but wanted the "quick look" option for
FS2K2 so have used FSDS2 to start it and get things right then I'll chuck it into FSDS3 to texture animate etc

You can do everything in FSDS2 and then just use FSDS3 to compile. I've not had problems opening in one an fsc created in the other.
