• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSDSv2 .MDL question

Hi all,

I am relatively new to 3D Object Design, and have run into a situation.

I am trying to get my FSDSv2 .MDL file to save as a Scenery .MDL file instead of an Aircraft .MDL file.

I read something, believe it was this Forum, on how to fool FS9 into thinking the Scenery .mdl is an Aircraft .mdl, just can't locate it, here or anywhere else. I also saw a window pop up at one point, don't recall which program I was using at the time, which offered the option of creating an FS9 Aircraft Model or an FS9 Scenery Model. Now can't locate that, either
Just too much reading over the past few weeks, I guess

If someone could either point me to that thread or shed some light on the program, I would be most appreciative.

Thnx in advance,
Larry

Hi Larry,

FSDS2 can not make scenery MDL files. You would have to use FSDS3 for that.

I think the other tool you mention is MakeMDL, it can indeed create aircraft and scenery MDL files, but FSDS2 can not produce the X files to feed it with.

Hi Arno

I've managed to get FSDS3 to place an aircraft as a scenery object but it's
half buried in the ground. I can't see any place to fix the altitude. Am I actually
following the wrong procedure for FSDS3?

Hi Arno,

Thanks for the reply. I was aware of that but thought there was a tweak. Guess not

I have been trying to decide whether to go with FSDSv3 or trying GMax again.
I think I'll go with Gmax and write off the cost of FSDS.

Thanks again for your input.

Ken,

You've got two choices. Either go back to FSDS3 and select all, move the aircraft up so the wheels are on the X axis, and remake your model or place an altitude in your placement .xml corresponding to the distance between the aircraft reference point and the bottom of the wheels. Ahem....been there..LOL.
