• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Airport Rotating Beacon

Hello to All,

I have a question regarding FSX airport rotating beacons. Have searched and read many posts here but have yet to find an answer. I hope you all can help.

Why do the FSX airport rotating beacons disappear at around ten miles from the airport? Or put another way, why are they not visible until you are within ten miles of an airport?

Can this be fixed?

In FS9 I was able to increase the white and green light intensity by changing values to fx_beacong (green) and fx_beaconwhi (white) effects files. However, the ten mile limit was still there.

In FSX, I can completely disable (renaming) those two fx_ files, and it has no affect on the airport rotating beacons. They still shine on.

Is the ten mile limit an fps helper for FSX?

I sure would like to fix this issue since a ten mile limit to a night navigation aid isn't very helpful.

Best Regards.

I'm not sure which "rule" I broke here which prevents a reply to my question, even from a Moderator.

Apparently I'm not welcome.

Hi Walt:

First, no rule broken that I can see, but be aware that at this time of the year we usually see a slow down of participation on all the FS forums, even here.

Regardless of the season, in this forum catering to more specialized interests, there sometimes is a wait before someone chooses to respond to a question that interests them... so one must be patient! :)

I believe that Arno, our gracious host and proprietor at this forum system, would state that all FS enthusiasts are welcome here... provided they are courteous to others. ;)

I have previously read here that attached effects are subject to a number of visibility limitations when the attach point tool is used, and that those effects are either not as restricted and/or more options are available to control them when placed as separate objects; I'm not sure how that would work though with a rotating object.

I believe you may find info that might help if you diligently search this forum system with a mix of keywords for beacon, light, attach, effect, visibility, distance etc.

Here's an example topic that might merit investigation for controlling lighting Effects for visibility:

PS: This recent FSX breakthrough is also worthy of mention; maybe the distance threshold part of this code might be of some use here?

Hope this gets you oriented for finding some answers!
