• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX KML compiled bgl crashes FSX

I have created an input file using polygons created with Google Earth (including correct tags), loaded the saved kml file into FSX KML and successfully compiled into bgl file and added to the addon scenery/scenery folder.

When I run FSX and select a nearby area to fly, the 'loading scenery' window takes forever to get to around 58% and then FSX crashes.

Is it necessary to adjust the entries in the fsx scenery library? I have never done this in FSX for addon scenery before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am guessing but I would say it points to either a conflict with another scenery or a bad bgl.
When I compile a terrain polygon with FSXKML, I put it in the scenery folder of the scenery I am making and not in the addon scenery/scenery folder.
So why not try to make a folder bearing the name of your scenery, with a scenery and texture subfolder, and put your FSXKML bgl in that scenery folder and activate it in the scenery library. If FSX still crashes, your bgl is probably the problem.

Thanks for your reply and advice.

I did what you suggested -
created a new folder with subfolders scenery and texture,
copied my bgl file to the scenery subfolder,
enabled the new folder in the scenery manager
disabled the existing addon scenery folder

FSX still crashes so it would seem my bgl is the culprit. Strange though as it only contains 4 polygons each tagged with legitimate tags.
I will now do a try and error by recreating the kml file removing one polygon at a time and recompiling until I find where FSX doesn't crash.

What I am trying to do is add an island on Sechelt inlet using -
exclude hydro polygon
exclude shorelines polygon
(add) hydro polygon for the large area around the island
(add) PolygonHole polygon for the island
(add) shorelines polygon for the island

I have found the "culprit" by trial and error method.
I started with my compiled bgl only containing
polygon tagged Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
That worked ok
I then added
polygon tagged Exclude__Shorelines (note the double underscore to exclude all shoreline types (as per documention)
That worked ok
I then added
polygon tagged Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
FSX then crashed.

Any ideas why the polygon tagged Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial would cause FSX to crash?
These tagged polygons are identical to documentation I downloaded on "creating islands"
This is crazy!
Could it be FSX KML causing the problem? I have the latest version.

Hi,

From what you write, I see that you added the water polygon twice.
Is that what you really did or is it a typing mistake?

Sorry my mistake caused by cutting and pasting.

The FIRST polygon should read polygon tagged as Exclude_Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial (not Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial)

Hi,

Suggest you leave out the 'exclude shorelines' and make it a seperate bgl afterwards or just use ADE to exclude the shorelines.
That way you would have the correct order in which to compile i.e. excl water, add water, add hole (make sure the hole is in the same kml as the water).

I removed the EXCLUDE_SHORELINES tagged polygon.
I then only had a BGL file containing polygons tagged
Exclude_Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
and
Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
FSX STILL CRASHED.

I then created a BGL file ONLY containing a polygon tagged
Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
FSX STILL CRASHED

Not liking to give up I then created a bgl containing polygons in a large expanse of water nearby (my original polygons were in a narrow inlet) and they were tagged
Exclude_Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial
and
Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial

FSX then did NOT crash BUT
the water polygon resulted in a HUGE area of nearby land covered being covered in water.
I thought that Hydro polygons only affected the area on the polygon created (that only exclude polygons affected nearby areas)!

Please tell me if I am wrong.

I now is appearing to me that FSXKML is garbage UNLESS someone can send to me a KML file which excludes hydro polys and adds water via a hydro polygon which I can use to compile a bgl which WORKS correctly.

The area in the world I am working on is at SECHELT, British Columbia, Canada! The area I started with is the inlet just north of the Sechelt town. The area I referred to above which covered all neighboring land is the large expense of water just south of the Sechelt town.

I am using SBuilderX313 (version 3.3.3.0) which is the latest I believe.

Don't know what the preFSX fix is?

I would hate to think how many hours I have wasted trying to get my scenery to work. Probably over 10 (seriously).

(George is right of course. It is just that I am stubborn, have no problems with FSX KML but do have some with SbuilderX due to lack of experience with the latter).
Your question related to FSX KML.
PreFSX is a small program to make KML's generated by the newest versions of GE compatible with (readable by) FSX KML.

This is the addition of Captain Island in the Sechelt inlet:

A couple of points. It covers two QMid11 rectangles and I couldn't be bothered to delete all of the shorelines and redraw them. The hydro-poly was constructed to fit the existing shorelines and I didn't add shorelines for the island.

George,

THanks for the work you did to prove that it can be done.

The reason why I posted this problem is that normally FSX does NOT crash. When I create a kml file containing the tagged polygons mentioned earlier in this post and then compile using FSX KML then copy the bgl file to either Addon Scenery/Scenery or a new folder which I enable using the library 'manager' then start FSX (which rebuilds the scenery library as normal) then select a nearby airport FSX takes forever to load scenery and when it gets to around 61% loaded it disappears from screen (crashes). When I remove the bgl file FSX loads scenery quickly and does not crash.

I want to create is POISE ISLAND (see below) - Captain Island is about 36 km NNW of Poise Island.

Is it possible for you to upload the kml file you used in your example so that I can compare?

Err, no. As I said I have never used FSXKML, I used SbuilderX. But you can see my polygons in the above pic. Red to exclude hydro-polys and blue for the new hydro-polys.

Thanks again George.
THis post now has 'crept' over to SBuilderX.
I posted a question on the SBuilderX forum (here at FSdeveloper) as I gave up on FSX KML and decided to try SBX although it appears not to be quite as easy to use (but I have learnt a lot in the past 2 or 3 days).
I would appreciate it if you could view that post (I won't go into it here as this forum is supposed to be confined to FSX KML) and offer a reply and/or advise where I can view/download some decent/extensive user guides?
It is titled "Newbie to SBX needing guidance"
Thanks
John

Search for "terrain_design_for_flight_simulator_x.zip" at Avsim.

I find it very simple to use.

Thanks George.
I had previously Googled "SBuilderX tutorials" /user guides/etc and did not find this one.
Even at Avsim searching for "terrain_design_for_flight_simulator_x.zip" returned nothing as did "terrain" and "design". I had to click on "extended search" and then search by filename.
Anyway I have now downloaded it and will read it.

A little tip John.

To create a polygon, start with a three-sided polygon, then, hold down the "i" key and click on a side to insert a vertex. Drag the vertex to the required position. Repeat to refine the polygon.
