• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX KML compiled bgl crashes FSX

Attached is a starter for you. Import the SBX file into SBuilderX and refine it to your satisfaction.

Wow thanks George.
I also noticed that the polygons in you example were triangles.
I also noticed that there were 3 (or 4?) and wondered why. All I could think of was that you needed more than one exclude_shorelines.
Thanks again I will have a look at the file tomorrow as it is getting late here in Sydney and I have to go back to work tomorrow.

Just looked up your location on Google Earth right up near the border country. Must be very cold there now. Actually the area looks interesting and maybe I should include that area during my planned driving tour of England and Wales in 2014. My wife and I have toured many other areas but not Tyne & Wear area. Wife wants to revisit the Yorkshire Dales again which shouldn't be too far away (90 miles according to Garmin MapSource).

Hi John,

Tyne & Wear is not very interesting but just north is the Northumberland coast which is very beautiful.

George,
Just got home and imported the sbx file.
I will still have to read the docs you referred to.
A whole new app to learn but as I have used ADE quite a bit and used FSX KML a little (and so understand a lot how scenery is made up) I hopefully will work it out quickly.
One thing I have to work out quickly is how to zoom in using SBX and be able to centre the image displayed and/or move the displayed image (in the SBX window). Reading will advise I hope.

George
Just finished reading most of the manual and it all makes sense now.
I had to wait till I printed it out to read. I don't know if you are the same but I find reading printed words easier than reading words on a screen. Who said "paperless society"?

George,
One question which I cannot find the answer to in the docs you referred me to or in the SBK forum.

How do you ADD a VERTEX to an existing polygon? I have tried right clicking on a polygon side and various other things.

I LOVE the way you can set transparencies to polygon so stuff underneath can be seen. Great product.

Held down the "i" key and clicked left mouse key but nothing happened. Then after 'Goggling' the question found that you have to be in polygon mode for it to work so all is well.

I have now at last tried out the file you sent. I removed the polygon for Captain Island and associated polygons, compiled and it worked although FSX takes longer to load scenery around 34% than it used to. At least it doesn't crash like when I was using FSX KML.

Lastly I noticed that the file you sent doesn't seem to have a terrain polygon for the island.
I can only assume that the polygon which exists in the shape of the island is a 'hole' polygon and that results in the terrain below to show through. I also noticed that the island has an elevation the same as the water which also suggests the polygon is a 'hole' (it is not identified as anything - no properties).
Is this correct as I am still learning about creation of terrain.

If I want an island which has an elevation higher than the surrounding water and/or has different vegetation then I need to create a polygon directly over (completely covering) the 'hole' polygon? If so it would be great if SBX allowed the user to COPY and PASTE a polygon. Or maybe it doesn't matter if it is slightly larger than the 'hole' polygon.

Hi,

(Following this thread with interest to see how you are coming on with SBX as I tried it several times and still am at a loss as to how make things work exactly as I want to. It is still a hit and miss in spite of George's repeated claims it is easy:o).
Regarding terrain elevation, I am afraid you will have to add some new mesh to your island if it was (default)water before you started out.
Guess you will now also have to search for and read 'terrain mesh' entries to accomplish what you want and in the meantime you will grow more frustrated still but a lot wiser also:D.

Hi (is it) Rob

Using George's file he attached earlier as a starting point I have removed some of his polygons and added some of my own (I created my own hydro (ocean perennial) polygons and checked with FSX and it looked good.
I will update this later.

Just adjusted my water polygons and created my 'hole' polygon for my island.
All worked well.
I feel that SBX is easier to use than FSX KML especially with being able to set transparency for polygons so that ones 'underneath' can be seen.
I attempted to make my island higher than the surrounding water by creating a separate (terrain) polygon and setting its altitude to 10 metres (all polygon points) but it made no difference.
Do NOT understand why there is a SET ALTITUDE option.

Last update.
My project is virtually complete and it all works.
My wish list for SBX -
To enable linking to FSX like ADE does so that you can position the aircraft for finer positioning of vertices.

Thanks guys
I had seen the menu item for the aircraft and tried it but I think that I had shut down FSX before I did. I shut down FSX every time I am ready to compile and copy the bgl so that FSX will rebuild the library.
Does anyone know exactly where in the installed SDK there is documentation describing the terrain tiles and what size they are so that I can view the correct size tiles in SBK? I tried a search for "tile" which revealed a few docs but none seemed to contain this info. Maybe I should be searching on another word (I thought they were called tiles).
