• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX KML improvement suggestion

Sorting attributes in KML file?

Hi,

I would like to se an alphabetical sorting function under the 'KML Details' window so that you can click the name field and all the tracklogs where sorted according to its name. This would greatly speed up the tagging proceedure of somtimes thousands of polys if you could do descriptions in big chunks.

Is there some other way to perform this sorting? I wasn't able to do this in Google Earth either. Currently trying a japaneese KML editor... which works fine except it takes a very long time to do.. 1) importing kml from clipboard (very slow), 2) sorting (which is fast), 3) open in Google Earth (very slow), 4) save to new kml-file. A 10 Mb kml takes about 10-15 minutes to edit! Theres got to be a faster way...?

cheers,
Ingolf

Yes good idea, in FSX KML though it displays the same KML hierarchy as in Google Earth.

You can multi select by holding the ctrl key. And then Press F2 on "description" to tag all the selected items with the same tag.

If the was a way to select items using a "wild card" then you would select items quickly and tag that way.

But also, do you know following trick? If you put you items in a KML folder then you can just tag the folder and all the items in the folder (that are not already tagged) will "inherit" the same tag as the folder.

In my own projects I organize them using folders (ie folders you create in Google Earth and that are part of the KML structure). Then for example I can put beaches in one "Beach" folder and tag them all by just tagging the folder with a Landclasspoly_TanBeach tag.

Your 'tricks' sounds great, but the reason I thought of a sorting function when pressing 'name' is because the digitized data I have is from a couple of years ago and was not made with the intention to be FSX scenery. I digitized it in a science project but it came out as really good shp-files for all kinds of use.

I use Trackmaker to convert these files into kml and subsequently FSX-KML to build bgl. Therefore I have no good kml-structure from the beginning (with respect to FSX usage). As it is now I have to sort coniferous treeclasses from deciduous, crops from grasslands, bogs from tundra and so on. Thousands.

The original shp-file mix these in a long list, however I now go around the problem by using KMLeditor_en 0.0.0.4 (japanese freeware tool) to sort the classes and then by exporting it to Google Earth it constructs a new sorted kml-file that fits FSX-KML perfectly fine.

However, this tool is awfully slow when it comes to sorting so to cut time (and keep up momentum when creating bgls) it would be really great to have this sorting by a mouseclick in FSX-KML. Especially, since FSX-KML is so great otherwise. It sort of looks like a well equipped Land Rover without a towing hook - that extra practical functionality ;)

I see you develop this software all the time and really look forward to the next update.

Cheers for a great program,
Ingolf

PS: a couple of pics for comparison of default vs new landscape using FSX_KML DS.
