• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

fsx load time

Is there a way to speed up fsx load time? A friend of mine has his taking about 5 mins to or more to load. He has a good sized library for Instant Scenery to see, and about 80 sceneries. I have onoy a few sceneries and the same library for Instant scenery to see. Mine loads pretty well.

Does FSX start loading slower and slwoer as one adds sceneries?

Is there a way to speed this up by perhaps putting many of his other sceneries into one or two large folders and the activating that folder in fsx scenery library? Bob

Your friend may have unnecessary services running in the background, a very aggressive virus checker, or needs a defrag of his hard drives... or all of the above.

Failing all that, he might just have to live with it.

But it does sound like more of a Windows problem than an FSX problem.

FSX will load more slowly as the scenery library gets larger and with more AI traffic. Just the same as previous versions, the more there is to load, the more time it takes.

5 minutes does seem a bit extreme for a Scenery Library size problem.

Also, spybots and virii can cause slowdowns of all computer functions.

Oh I don't know, my FS9 takes nearly ten minutes to load but there is a huge amount of scenery and 19 gigabytes of AI aircraft with a couple of million traffic legs.

It doesn't take much increase in AI traffic to extend loading times of FSX and extra scenery folders will increase the loading time aswell. It isn't a problem, it just takes longer to load. My FSX certainly takes over five minutes to load, but there isn't a problem with it, and for sure there are no bots, malware or virii involved.

I agree with Graham. Using perfmon it is easy to see where the time is being taken in my FSX installation since my scenery and AI aircraft are on separate drives.

Firstly FSX checks all scenery areas to see whether there has been any changes, it then scans all of the AI aircraft before getting to the main dialog.

Well I just bought a new fast SATA HDD and installed FSX on that which has helped (disk space is so cheap now!...I couldn't justify getting a solid state drive though)

I agree with the other comments about defragging etc but wonder how much of that scenery does he actually use day to day?

I would suggest simply deactivating the scenery areas that he doesn't use- When he wants to fly to those areas, simply activate them again and rebuild the scenery database.

You can also temporarily move some aircraft folders out of SimObjects/Airplanes (or wherever you have them) and this will speed up your Aircraft Selection screen quite a bit.
