Hi.

I'm wanting to attach a simple smoke effect to a chimnye for a FSX model that I've created. I've looked over the Modeling tool's html to find out how this is done. If I'm reading this right, I need somthing called 3ds Max to attach effects to a FSX model?

Ok, so I googled this 3ds Max, but it looks like this 3ds Max is payware:eek:. Do I need this 3ds Max or can effects be attached through Gmax?

Thank you for your time.

hi kenny,
No you can use gmax.First clone your object.In the fsx tools dropdown menu you will see attachpoint tool.Open this menu.Tick the effect box this will in turn open a further menu effect to attach.Just scroll down the effects untill you come to the smoke effects,just select which smoke effect you need and click attach to selected geometry.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CLONE OF YOUR OBJECT SELECTD FIRST.Thats it.If you need time of day etc that is explained in the sdk.
regards

Thanks for the reply.

I must have mist something. I am still rather green with Gmax, but there is not any fsx tools dropdown menu in my Gmax program. I have installed FSX's sdk's from FSX's #1 CD, but there is not a fsx tools dropdown menu.

You need to do one more step, Kenny, and that's install the FSX Game Pack into Gmax. Look in your FSX SDK folder - the game pack is under [path to SDK]\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK. Copy the entire "FSX_GmaxGamePack" folder into your Gmax "gamepacks" folder.

Once you've copied that folder, start Gmax using the "FSX_GMax" shortcut that's in the FSX Gamepack folder, and you should be ready to tweak and export FSX files. As part of the gamepack install, you should now have an "FS Tools" menu in your Gmax menubar.

Gmax

You need to do one more step, Copy the entire "FSX_GmaxGamePack" folder into your Gmax "gamepacks" folder.

Hi Bill,
I have the same question about the drop down menu.
I have Vista SP2, I do have the "FSX_GmaxGamePack" folder but how can I create the Gmax "gamepacks" folder to copy into ? Where can I get that Gmax program?
Also when I browse the "FSX_GmaxGamePack" folder I don't see the "FSX_GMax" shortcut.

Please help, I'm a newbie
Jimmy

Bill thanks for the reply.

Ok I have gone of through sdk folder and everthing inside it with a fine tooth comb and there is no FSX game pack to be found, so I uninstalled the sdk's and reinstalled them, thinking maybe I did something wrong. I copied and pasted the whole Modeling folder in to the gmax gamepack folder.

Inside of the FSX sdk folder there is a folder named Gmax. In side of it there are three exe's gmax 12, help and tutorials. So I ran the gmax 12 exe. This uninstalled my current version of gmax. I ran it again and it installed gmax back, but there is still no FSX Game Pack folder or fsx tools dropdown menu.

Oh Vista and no on the SP2.

Jimmy, see my reply below with the screenshot of my SDK folders. If you need to get Gmax, you can download version 1.2 from http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax .

Hi Kenny,

My SDK is for FSX/Acceleration. Here's a screenshot of the gamepack, with the path to it shown in the toolbar. What's yours look like at this level?

Bill

Look closely at the screenshot I provided -- I'm two directories farther down than what you showed in your shots. What's inside your "Environment Kit/Modeling SDK" folder?

Hi,

Did you only install the SDK from the FSX disk? You need to make sure you have the SDK version installed that matches your FS version.

FSX RTM -> SDK SP1
FSX SP1 -> SDK SP1A
FSX SP2 -> SDK SP2

I ran the fsx disk and here is what's in it. I did not get a choice for any of these below.
FSX RTM -> SDK SP1
FSX SP1 -> SDK SP1A
FSX SP2 -> SDK SP2

Hi,

On the FSX disks you will only find the RTM version of the SDK. The others are updates that you will have to download from MS and install.

Houston we have lift off:)

Aron, I whne to Microsft's site and downloaded the SDK for SPA and now I have a FSX Game pack and a FS Tool drop down menu. Thanks for the help :D

Thanks again for all of the hepl.

Getting back to attachig a effect to a model. Now that the attching tools are there for FSX, I did as stewart286 said.

I created a box over the chimney and named it smoke_box and cloned the smoke_box. I clicked on the FS Tools drop down menu, AttachPiont Tool and follwed Stewart286's instruchtions, but when I export the model this is what I got.

The other thing that I see that's differant then before, in the FSX Gmax, in the export menu at the bottom it's (Flightsim Model (*MDL) and in the FS2004 Gmax it's (Flightsim Scenery Object (*MDL) I know I've fouled somthig up.
